Comcast Xfinity Wireless Network

Last October I got a letter from Comcast telling me they had a new modem with higher speeds and it was for free. Just go to the web site and apply for it. In February I got another one and went to the web site again and when I went to fill out the app, it said, "Oops, you did this already." In June I got another letter and went to the web site again and it told Oops again. SO I called them up and asked when I might get the new modem. I told them I got 3 letters and 2 ooopses. She said we will get it right out to you via UPS. 3 days later it was here, 3 more days later I got another one. Lovely, I can only use 1 though.

So today I am going to install it. Looks simple enough. I have 2 computers to hook up, my phones and my Laser printer. While I am at it I think I will do a D&C to my system. Probably full of cat hair.

I am curious to see how much faster it will get this time. I now get 50 meg a minute downloads. Every update I get it is faster and faster. Downloads anyway. They still throttle uploads to 500 kbs.

It is a ARRIS TG862 also known as a Gateway 1. It does not have dual transfer like my router does and it is slower on the wireless computer. Hope the wife does not notice much. It is real snappy hard wired to it. It is also only 2.4 ghrz, and you have to buy a battery. Checking into that now as it is also my phone connection. Power goes out goodbye phone.

So basically it is the cheap one.

The battery is $40! Also the wireless connection is slower than I had before. I had my own Netgear dual band router. Hard wired speed is faster though. I have seen many complaints about this while looking for help.

Hook your good router into the new crappy one and away you go.

Turns out not to be the modem after some exploring. I got a new version of Norton the other day and did not even know. It got on Kerri's computer also. I backed off some of the security that is overboard and also had to change some of her IE settings and she is flying again.

Well another update. I used to download programs from Steam at the high point of 3.1 MB/S. Now I am at 8.4 to 9 MB/S, that is better than double the speed. And now they are offering me a new package for free with the voice controlled TV stuff. I do not watch enough regular TV to even be bothered with it. I have a wall full of DVDs. I watch AHC and H2 and TCM. They just gave us a new package after Kerri called and complained. I now have all of the pay channels in the HD package except TMC. I have the digital phone package and the Internet for $130 a month. That was $220 with no pay channels. We have 3 boxes and dvrs. Plus they were charging me for the old modem and the second new one they sent by mistake. They gave back all those charges.

Anyway I am flying at the speed of light now. And I checked out all the pay channels everyday for 2 weeks now and have not seen one movie I want to see or don't already own on DVD. Cable TV is a crock, especially with things like netflicks.
