Back to my original question: what does Win10 offer that Win7 does not?

Not much in terms of features. Better search, window management, file management, gaming tools.

They say the file explorer is improved. If they solve the one bug that has been infuriating me for years, when you drag a file or folder to a target folder, and suddenly the target folder opens or scrolls out of the target window, whcih is the stupidest thing in the universe because YOU DON'T MOVE A TARGET WHILE IT'S BEING USED THIS SHOULD BE SELF-EVIDENT and now you're stuck dragging a folder with no target and your finger on the mouse is getting tired and often you drop it in a random place in your file system never to be seen again, then I'm switching as soon as I can.

Also it's a new OS as such there'll be a lot of invisible improvements in performance, stability and security.

The gaming community is saying a lot of the games are running smoother as well.
My mother will like the screen mirroring. (Miracast)
You will be able to "snap" up to four windows instead of two. That's something I use a lot, when moving files from place to place on my rig.

The only thing worrying me, is that Microsoft is going to stop numbering OS' after this and start a yearly subscription fee. That could end up costing a lot more than buying an OEM disk and using it for several years.

They're going Apple and I don't like it. I'm a PC man for a reason.
Although I've heard MS is already doing that with Win 7 and 8, and that's why there is no Windows 7 service pack two for instance.

Anyone know if (should you choose the free upgrade to 10) we will be able to get an ISO for the installer DVD and go the traditional install route, vs. running whatever their little update utility is going to do?

I was wondering that too. I was thinking of installing Windows 10 as dual boot to see If I really like it. Not only that, but clean installs are usually less buggy than an upgrade.

I shall wait for a purpose to update. New gadgetry is not always better. I find win7 to be almost bullet proof and having spent several thousand dollars to go from xp to 7 at work I am pretty happy with where we are at. As far as gaming the truth will come out with you brave souls who will jump off of the bridge just because it's there. Go with God folks.

I'm mostly just curious about the alleged gaming performance improvements, and the upcoming DX12... beyond that I really don't give a rats butt about Windows 10.

If installing the upgrade, will all the other programs that live with Windows have to be reinstalled again also?

Nope. All my stuff worked flawlessly. The only thing you might have to reinstall is your anti-virus software, which will need an update anyway for Win10.

Can I turn off the notifications?

Yes. Click “Customize” in the System Tray and turn off the Get Windows 10 app notifications in the menu that comes up.
