Questions about System memory, and motherboard?

Unread postby Railroy19 » Sat Mar 28, 2015 6:52 am

I am looking to get a new computer and I'm on the fence about the speed and amount of ram to get in the new computer,
The one I'm looking at has 16GB DDR3 1600 MHZ. I'm wondering if I should purchase faster ram like 2133 Mhz or even buy 32GB DDR3. 1600MHZ
Would this be overkill?
Also the motherboard standard is a GIGABYTE Z97X-SLI The technician told me after I asked him, that he would prefer an ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK2
This will more than likely be my last computer purchase and I want it to be able to run Trains for as long as I'm here.
I'm buying this computer from Digital Storm

Prossesor Intel i7 4790K 4.0 Ghz.
Power supply is 850W EVGA SuperNOVA.
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 980 4 GB

Thanks for your help and advice.
Bob

Hi, Bob. The 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3 will work just fine. That's what I have in my gaming desktop. I'm not looking to add any. Either of those mobos will work well. The ASUS will not accept RAM above 1866. The GIGABYTE will accept up to 3000 so in that respect it would be more flexible. The ASUS is more expensive by about $50 at Newegg. I'm not saying that either would be "better", but 16GB of 1600MHz RAM is very acceptable for TS2015. My specs are in my sig line. I built this desktop in December 2011 and I'm slowly upgrading the components as my budget allows.
What graphics card are you considering? That makes a WORLD of difference in performance.
I recently upgraded to a GeForce GTX TITAN 6GB graphics card. It replaces two GIGABYTE HD 6950 1GB cards connected in "Crossfire" configuration. That allows two cards to work together.
The power supply looks sufficient at 850W.
How about the HDD?
Good luck on your purchase! I don't have direct experience with them but I've heard Digital Storm makes good systems. I hope you keep us informed.
You can also PM me for more information if you like.
Best,
Marc

Thanks Mark

I can save some money by purchasing the 1600 mhz ram. I'm always trying to overkill my computers because I have no idea what they need to have. !*don-know!*
And I guess stick to the Gygabite MB.
The video card is a single NVIDIA GTX 980 4GB. this should be sufficient because I now have a 650 card and it works ok for TS2015.
Don't know much about running two cards so I won't go looking for trouble *!!wink!!*
I have 16mhz of ram in this computer and it only ever shows about 20% use.
The new computer has a SSD 250GB Samsung 850 EVO
And a 1TB Seagate hardrive. I already have a 2 TB extra hard drive in this computer so I can transfer that to the new computer.
The new one will have windows 8 installed but I'm reading that windows 10 will be out soon That means I would have to upgrade to win 10 I suppose.
That's when I start getting into trouble. Can't keep up with Mycrosoft.

Anyway Thanks again Mark.

Good deal, Bob. That GTX 980 will do you VERY well! I'm going to be very careful going to Windows 10. I have a spare Win7 system that I'm going to use as a testbed. Once I'm satisfied it works OK on a bare-bones system I'll start adding STUFF to it and see how it flies. (and no, you don't HAVE TO upgrade to Win10...)
That SSD will work great for your boot drive and Windows cache. Leave apps off of it and put them on the 1TB drive. This sounds like a really nice system. I wish you all the luck with it. Keep me posted on how it works for you.
Best,
Marc
