Java... I want to disable but...

Unread postby Ericmopar » Mon Mar 10, 2014 10:59 pm

I want to disable Java, and the websites I use are getting better about not needing it anymore, but sometimes you run into a login or something else that needs Java to click on a button successfully.
Is there a way to disable or remove Java from a PC and get everything to work?

This has been sparked by a recent article that stated, that Java is responsible for about 50% of zero day threats getting through.

Eric
I guess that you have seen this: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/di ... rowser.xml.
I thought these zero-day threats had now been fixed??

Apparently they have not Peter. I can disable Java in my browsers, but sometimes you run into something that needs it, like a security window (that last one is ironic, isn't it? :D)

If you use firefox, get the noscript addon. It will let you selectively run or block javascripts for a given site or all sites.

Which version of Java do you have installed? If it is 6 I would recommend you fully uninstall it and move to 7 (8 is available but its rather new). I recommend this because 7 prompts you when your browser asks to run an applet. It still has some 0 day problems, but like Windows UAC prompts you are aware of what is happening and you decline to not have it run.

I'm on SE7 U51, 10.XXXX I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago.

I've noticed that it isn't asking, even though I have "always ask" selected in the add-ons manager. If I click "never run" there is a difference.

Eric
This is an interesting read and the author gets round Java by installing another browser and only using that when Java is needed.
It looks like Flash Player and Adobe Reader are as bad as Java wrt zero-day attacks.

I thought Adobe invented the 0 day flaw? *!greengrin!*

Seriously though, I am surprised that you are not always prompted. It one of the more reported annoyances in the last company I worked at.
