Rotary Dumper

Unread postby emdsd90mac » Tue Jan 01, 2013 9:43 pm

Ok, so I figured why not. I started searching the web for some good photos and decided to attempt this. The rotary dumper portion is mine and the car I got from the SketchUp warehouse. It's been fun guessing all of the dimensions. It would be so nice if there was a way of animating this to where it would really unload cars as well. Way, way out of my league on that part. Oh and by the way, I am completely addicted to creating content right now. !!*ok*!!

You can animate the dumper but I don't think you can get the car to rotate with it. You could have a large cloud of coal dust fly up masking the car so you don't see it not turning with the dumper.

That's a bit fancy. What's wrong with doing it like this...?

Ahem! To get back to the rotary dumper for a moment, I seem to recall seeing one in (begin furtive whisper) Trainz (end furtive whisper) that created the illusion of turning the car being emptied. This is relying on a mere distant memory (perhaps wishful thinking): I haven't gone anywhere that simulator since dumping it off my system several years ago. Just cogitating here: given that containers and various forms of dust and lumps can be made to appear and disappear as parts of a loading or unloading sequence, could a "phantom" car that would appear only during the unloading sequence be placed as part of the rotary device? In other words, a normal hopper enters the loader; the phantom car appears, concealing the normal car and rotates with the loader; when the sequence ends, the phantom vanishes leaving the normal car visible again. Sort of like a staged "magic" trick. Or not. Of course, matching the phantom hopper to the normal one could be problematic, but those of us who use the current container cranes and used to seeing odd boxes appear and disappear, so peculiar illusions are already normal.

Is there any more of this eggnog in the fridge?!

No need for clouds of obscuring dust or illusionary vehicles, just do it.

I wish I knew where to start learning about that. That video looks amazing! Who is working on that?

No one. It's just the old Rail Sim dev example i added an unloading animation to, to see whether a tippler was possible.
Turns out it is :D

So it is possible !*YAAA*! That is amazing!! And you know how to go about this? If so, please PM me and perhaps we can work together on this little project for our community.
