Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railway

Unread postby nsl714 » Mon Oct 29, 2012 2:41 pm

Here's a route that's long been a favorite railroad of mine. (if my alias is any indication :P ). For those who don't know, the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railway (or North Shore Line for short) was an interurban that ran from downtown Chicago IL to Milwaukee WI until 1963. It was considered (and still is) considered by many to be the "standard" interurban. It was known for fast and personable service until it met its untimely end to the Interstate system. I have tried multiple times (very unsuccessfully) to recreate the railroad in MSTS, and each time never got too far. Now with Railworks, it somehow clicks, and I've been going forward in force constructing track over the past week. Currently I have the Mundelein branch built, tracks and VERY bare scenery, (literally a few roads and all the station platforms), but I have DEM data extracted for the entire railroad, from Roosevelt Rd in Chicago to 6th and Michigan in Milwaukee.

Lets take a ride now on the Mundelein shuttle as it navigates the 8 mile branch from Lake Bluff to Mundelein. Our car is waiting at the shuttle platform, adjacent to the old Shore Line route, (abandoned 1955 to passenger traffic), and underneath the Chicago and Northwestern.

Image

The train leaves Lake Bluff and makes its way up the hill to briefly join/cross the Chicago-Milwaukee mainline at Green Bay Road.

Image

Image

The car slows to 15 mph as it crosses a second C&NW line, this time at grade. This is also the point where the west leg of the South Upton wye joins the branch, allowing local trains from Chicago to terminate at Mundelein.

Image

2 miles west is Rondout, where the North Shore passes on an embankment over the Elgin Joliet and Eastern (who also interchanges freight with the railroad at this location), and the Milwaukee Road.

Image

Image

And further west of Rodout, our train passes under I-94, one contributing factor to abandonment of the railroad.

Image

This is Thornbury Village, 2 stops west of Rondout.

Image

This just shows the massive valley that the right of way descends into to cross the Desplaines River. There are few kinks to work out here yet, but I'm pretty happy with how the grade turned out.

Image

Libertyville was the largest town the railroad passed through between Lake Bluff and Mundelein. It was a stop for every train in both directions.

Image

Continuing west from Libertyville, the train veers left and into a cutting prior to reaching Mundelien a few miles South and West.

Image

And this is Mundelein, the most Westerly point the North Shore reached. Further down beyond the station was an interchange with the Soo Line.

Image

Car storage at Mundelein was the Southbound track beyond the station. Cars are lined up here as well as on the stub tracks at the station, ready for the next days morning rush.

Image

And so concludes a Westbound (Northbound by timetable) journey on the Mundelein Branch. I shall attempt to keep updates somewhat regular as construction progress is made. There are few technical things that may have to be worked out for any potential rolling stock (see below), mainly with the elevated system in Chicago. The North Shore changed from Overhead wire to 3rd rail for the run into Chicago, and I've come to the conclusion that it can be replicated in Railworks. The track is no big deal, I can easily change that from overhead to 3rd rail, (You may notice that there is catenary AND simple wire. That was a little trickery with the track rule, making one shape referece to 4th rail electrification), but the rolling stock would need a bit of finagling. It has been proven that it does work in the Railworks game engine, (look no further then the Class 377 electric supplied with the now default London to Brighton route), but I'll leave wiser, more knowledgeable souls to work out the technicalities of that.

And I'd like to kind of make a small request of the community. I'm currently looking for a source for a few structures for the route, to hopefully make the route more accurate. Catenary towers and line poles are high on the list, as well as a couple unique structures along the line. I'm also hoping that this route construction will inspire someone to create a proper Interurban car suitable for the route, or any traction route for that matter. You may notice that I am already plodding about the route in a North Shore car. That is a MSTS model that Jim "Sniper" Ward had converted over to Railworks a few years ago, when it was still Rail Simulator. The car was, (and still is) a great MSTS model, but it does look rather dated in the Railworks environment.

So thank you for reading, and look out for more updates as construction continues on the Road of Service!

If you post some pictures of the items you need modeled, perhaps someone will be inspired to make them for you (no I can't volunteer, my plate overfloweth).

Of course. The North Shore used two distinct overhead supports, which are my main concern. First were the steel towers used on the Skokie Valley Route:

And the Wooden poles for the remainder of the route:

http://www.davesrailpix.com/cnsm/htm/cnsm350.htm

As for Structures, there a few unique buildings. First are the stations placed at Dempster St, Kenosha, and Mundelein. All of the same design:

The Milwaukee Terminal is another unique building that I couldn't hope to reasonably substitute for:

The Chicago elevated structure is something else I must sort out as well. I plan on using the Scalerail open bridge deck for the track, but the substructure is something I need to figure out.

And of course there are the beautiful North Shore Interurban cars, in both standard green and "Silverliner" paint schemes.

Yes, it is Railworks.

I plan in the next week or so to have a bit more track done, (a lot more actually). I won't be doing much of the scenery myself, as I have an acquaintance who is very eager to do tackle that portion. Thus I can focus on the trackwork, and make it as accurate as I can. After some more track is laid, I am planning on releasing an early beta version to allow people a look through of what has been done so far. Also soon, I will have to figure out signalling eventually. Sounds fun to figure out...I think. !**duh*!!

What type of signaling do you need?

I am mainly concerned with figuring out how railworks signalling particularly works right now. Though since you have asked, a proper type of signal for the North Shore would be US&S Signals without the hoods that come on the default signals. The North Shore used N-2 signals, like this example .

The other type of signalling I have to think about are the signals used on the CTA, such as this one: http://www.chicago-l.org/operations/tow ... wer18l.jpg There are a couple different signals there which give indications for complex junctions like Tower 18 in that picture as well as block signals.

I will be posting SMMDigital's tutorial on creating signals on my blog soon. I have already walked through it and I think its a great primer for modeling enthusiasts. You may want to give it a try.

Actually, I plan to include the north side mainline from the loop to Howard st. on the L, so there will be a bit of CTA included. ;)

And it continues! Track now stretches North to North Chicago, and the nerve center of North Shore freight operations, Pettibone Yard. This area is probably one of the most complicated to do, with the North Shore mainline, Shore Line, yard, and industrial trackage, in addition to the C&NW making a cameo, and a second industrial railroad weaving in and out of the Chicago Hardware Foundry to the West. Yeah....plenty to do yet.

Can you get any pictures and blueprints for any of these cars. As well as sounds if possible. I might try one of these as a learning project for building locomotives for Railworks. I would need blueprints, and as many photo's as possible for these.
