Red River ships, buildings and route.

Unread postby jpetersjr » Thu Jun 28, 2012 11:27 am

A little something I've been working on for a route I'm building, a schooner from the late 19th century and early 20th century.

My Red River route will be donationware with the option of download first free and then leave a donation.

Here's some route pictures.

I believe that it will benefit the community if the route couldn't be classified as payware. Besides, most of the community I would believe would donate anyways if they liked the route. All the buildings and extra scenery will also be custom made to further make the route interesting.

Here's some more progress on the ship.

I will also do a version of the ships with the sails taken down.

My great great grandfather used to serve on a ship like this back in WW1.

Forward ends needs to be much more tapered and pointed.

Right now it looks like a bathtub. :)

Also remember that all sails on a schooner will be fore and aft rigged, no square sails on the masts of a schooner (though the spanker on the mizzen is fine).

But hey, I can't even do that much!

More progress on the ship.

I might make this ship a galleon instead and build another to be a schooner.

Red River schooner 3.jpg

Also, by the way I'm making the sails, I'm trying to keep them low on poly level. Would love to do them in full 3d, but then the ship probably wouldn't work in the sim.

This is actually a very difficult shape to make, that hull was almost impossible to make at all so all sides are rounded, including the bottom. And the rudder area was even harder to make.

So I'm afraid this shape will have to do, at least it looks like a ship.

Hi Jonathan,

You can make a fairly convincing sail with a bollowing appearance, with very few polygons (just a few adjoining triangles), if you use the creasing tool on the faces. Make the vertex in the middle of the sail bulge out a bit, select all the faces (on the same side of the sail, of course) and apply the crease tool. Slide the creaser all the way over to the left and you'll get a nice rounded effect.

Cheers,
Mike

I figured the taper was pretty tough to replicate.

Can you make the spanker on the mizzenmast shorter? Then you could put square rig sails at the top of that mast too, as they would be in a larger ship such as this one.

Not sure I'd call it a galleon, since there weren't any in the late 19th century. Just a sail powered cargo vessel, really. :)

Looks great no matter what you call it.

I'm removing all the track and trees on the route and then it will be replaced by the default track and trees.

Now that I've removed all 3dtrains stuff off of my route the asset block works perfectly, even with all of my assets checked in the editor. That's going to make building the route much easier and quicker, except everything close to the track will still have to be done manually so we don't see a bunch of strange looking straight lines.

Will place down some default track tomorrow.

Some more progress.
Red River 1936 Progress 2 A.jpg

Replaced the 3dtrains tracks and trees with default tracks and trees and the asset block will now work.

Some more screens, the route is starting to look real good. Although still have to fill in some areas manually since the asset block only puts down squares and I don't want trees in the middle of the track. Though, it's making work a lot easier and I'm covering the mountains with trees faster then I could before.

Once done the route will be about 60 miles long starting from the port and onto the next couple towns.

Yes, as of now I'm not doing anymore work on the track until I switch it again. Since I want wood and not concrete.

A new viaduct for the route.

Once done this route will bring a ton of new freeware assets to the game.

JP,
Everything looks interesting. What is the route based upon? Timeframe?

It's based on the mountain area of Missouri in the year 1936.

In that area they have mountains very similar to this, except the route is a fiction route. No actual landmarks, but some areas might look similar.

This implies that there's something wrong with my objects and RW asset blocks, which I can assure you is not the case. *!rolleyes!*
