NEC 2 (unofficial) [Help Needed]

Unread postby yomamma » Fri Apr 27, 2012 10:51 pm

Latest Update: June 10th

A picture speak a thousand words, but as you can see I've started to make progress. If you haven't yet rode Sunnyside yard, its a complicated yard with Over and underpasses and over crowded entrances to Grand Central.

I've ALSO found a video from a HHP-8 that rides almost the DIRECT length of the route. hope you enjoy ;D

Last Update : June 6th

Instead of me just adding to the pages of reply for updates, THIS will be the update. As stated above, the latest changes will be dated. As it is Upated the second to latest post will be saved in the case that someone has not read the last

To start off with the latest update the NEC from PHL-WIL has been Delayed. It will be continued my a partner once he has the time, but I am disappinted to tell you I have lost interest in that section of track. BUT, What has Started is the line from NY PEN - Oak point yard

It measures approx. 10mil. But crosses 2 main features. Sunnyside Yard, and Hells gate Bridge. Now this time its not only me but a modeler by the name ca2kjet. He's been working on the bridge and Also recreating the catenary as they seem to change once exiting the East river tunnel. As I stated in my first post, I'm from New England So i think thats what lead to me creating this project to continue North. I had never actually riden the southern part of the NEC so I couldn't actually see myself riding that track after its completion.

ONE other thing is that I'm starting a repaint of the B40-8W Providence and Worcester of the model by eyein12. This is an actual company that I grew up around so I plan on taking my time with it. A scenario will be created from Oak point yard - Fresh Pond yard.

I've only just begun so here is my progress.

Before you get too comfortable with SketchUp, you should know you can't get your models into RW from SketchUp. You have to import into another modeling program, like 3DCrafter, which can then convert your model into RW.
You also have to watch out with SketchUp as it can make your models extremely poly heavy.

Yah I've also downloaded the Student Version of 3ds max and a large text book on how to run it. As for the poly I'm hoping that i can fix it in 3ds max as modeling is a whole new area for me. But thanks for the reminder :D

Hi Mom,

Here's a link that might interest you: http://www.multimodalways.org/archives/rrs/CR/CR.html

Look in the employee timetables sections. There's also track and zone charts for your viewing pleasure. :D
Cheers!

Also, to save on work and poly level in sketchup make the model as flat as possible and paint the outside of the model manually with a sketchup default texture to make sure your faces on the model stay in tact during the export. Or some might disappear, like what happened to me until I figured out a way to hold them there.

There's also 3DCrafter, which is a lot cheaper than 3DMax. It's only $70. - USD.

There's quite a few folks here that use 3DCrafter and can probably be of some help for you.
You can import SKU models into 3DC to export into RW. Here's some discussion on that.

Good work there. Hope to see this someday, and for someone to do NY Penn to Boston so we can run the entire NEC if we are crazy enough to want to do so. !**duh*!!

Ditto for me. I suspect it will be a good bit of work, but once you master the basic tools, it will probably go faster. Wilmington is probably a good 1st step just to get your feet wet.

That pretty much what I've been thinking, been doing some more research and been finding that Wilmington is really a historic station, so that just puts more fuel for me to get this project done for all yall'

For speed limits, the maximum speed limits on the center tracks should reach 135mph for Acelas, and 125mph for all other trains. The outer tracks probably have a maximum of 110mph. This of course varies from segment to segment, particularly for curves and such, and I can't really help on speedlimits by the milepost, but some common sense should give you a pretty close match. That's actually the main thing I dislike about the official NEC, is that the speed limits are too slow, only reaching 120mph when they should be 125 for anything that can reach it, and 135 for Acelas.

One thought comes to mind - there are yards of various kinds at spots along the NEC that could be worth adding. I was just remembering that the Bear DE shops are just south of Wilmington. Not right on the mainline, but really just a few miles away..

I do plan on adding all yards on or not far from the MainLine since after finishing Wilmington-30th street station I'd like to add numerous scenario, some of which would incorporate these yards.
At this moment right now I'm working on the SEPTA Train Stations (Darby, Curtis Park, Sharon Hill...) but once some of the yards start appearing I'll post an update :D
