It's Electric! Conrail E44

My latest side project, working on beside the speeder. The GG1's younger sister, the E44. They survived onto Conrail and Amtrak, and many still exist in museums. Since these often ran with the GG1s, this E44 will go perfectly with Mr Cowen's or RSC's GG1s.

Tons to do, just working on the front half so far, need more pics of the rear.

Ah did you find a drawing? I've found drawings of quite a few US electrics but not that one.

Here's one that I found:

It has most of the dimensions.

Thanks for the blueprints, I was going off of an old photo that only showed the front. *!!thnx!!* Now I can do this loco justice.

If I had only known that you wanted this. I was at the Pennsylvania museum about a month ago, and I could have taken all sorts of photos (they even had the cab open to visitors that day).

I suppose the appeal of the GG1 is just that the appearance is unique and unmistakable in many ways. They say the E44 was nicknamed the "brick" and when you see the thing up close it seems like a pretty good nickname for the thing. But it is also far more generic looking - to a non-railfan, it could be mistaken for a number of other locos.

Cool, wish the cab had been open when I went. They only had the CR GP30 cab open then. The E44 is rather generic, but it shows the diversity of the Pennsy's electric fleet, everything from get the job done locomotives to ones that looked great doing it, they had reliable electric power everywhere! By the way, this locomotive will come in several paint schemes, original PRR colors, PC "bankrupt black", CR patch out, and Conrail "Can Opener". It will (hopefully!) feature working cab stuff, working pantographs (wouldn't be an electric without 'em!), TS2012 shaders and working lights as well as custom sounds. Anywho, I'm almost done with the boring tracing, and then this fast freight locomotive will emerge!

This is actually the E-44's predecessor, the ex-VGN, ex-NYNH&H E-33. The E-44 was a development of this design, based on experience with PRR's earlier rectifier units from GE and Westinghouse. PRR's E-44 diagram is here: http://prr.railfan.net/diagrams/PRRdiag ... &sz=sm&fr=. Note the link above the left corner that will open a larger scan.

At the time, it was said that the object of the E-44 project was a further development of the design that could be built with a diesel engine and generator installed as a package which could easily be swapped-out for a bank of rectifiers as electrified territory was extended. Half a century later, the big diesels are ubiquitous, but the electrification has yet to happen. That said, we have at least one of each of these modern electrics preserved to remind us of the possibility. Now that we have the NEC, both of these units would be a very welcome and worthwhile addition to the virtual fleet. Thanks kindly for this model.

Here we go: http://www.trainweb.org/willstrainart/T ... ne/E44.htm

Don't know why I never tried that site in the first place, but in my defense I've lost a lot of bookmarks :P

The GG1 isn't totally unique.. the P5 is a little one and I'm sure I've seen something else of similar design. It's by far the most famous, I guess.

I'm actually using an image similar to that Kali, thanks though. If I can get around to it I'll post some progress pictures.

The E44 begins to take shape.. With 3D doors on the side, cab taking shape, and 3D brake equipment underneath. If someone could find detail shots of the underside of one of these beasts it would be great. Front and back are most certainly not even near realistic looking, and need tons of work.

Other than that though, Looking great! !!*ok*!!

Thanks guys, I actually used to model for a much more poly intensive game, so I'm pretty good at keeping polys manageable. Thanks though. No more work to show yet, I'm busy with other stuff. Will keep yall posted.

Heh, I started making cars with a 3k budget - my worst issue these days is not using enough!
