New Program, New Project

Unread postby Giuseppe » Sun Sep 11, 2011 4:46 pm

I've just recently gotten into modeling for Railworks (I don't even have the program yet; I'm waiting till Railworks 3 comes out,) and I've been playing around in Blender for the last few weekends. Here is lil' sneak peak of my first real project in Blender. Comments appreciated!

Oops, sorry about that! I was lazy and linked the image from another website, rather than uploading it. How's this?

I must say, it's looking great.

What kind of train is this for?

Very very nice indeed...great work!
All I can say is, if you don't have Railworks and this is your first real project for it in Blender....then we have another great modeler in the making for our hobby.... **!!bow!!**
May I also be a little nosy and ask....will your released projects be freeware, payware or both.

I started working on the locomotive today and it's actually going quicker than I imagined. There's still a lot of work to do, though.... As always, suggestions appreciated:

Thanks for the kind words, although I still have a lot to learn! !*hp*!

As to your question, I am definitely, at this point, seriously considering releasing this as payware. As much as I dislike the idea of it, anyone who has tried their hand at 3d modeling knows how time consuming it can be, not to mention the additional time I spent collecting drawings and measuring and photographing prototypes (in my case, if you're interested, the GP40-2's used up in Montrose, Colorado.) I have, of course, not made a final decision yet, so your input is welcome.

Anyway,
cheers!

Honestly, I don't really have a problem with payware, as long as what I get is up to payware standards (and it isn't overpriced). There's some payware out there that I personally feel is not worth paying a cent for.

I couldn't model a birdhouse, let alone a locomotive. As Steve said, I have no problem with payware. This would be a boring sim without all you designers! !!*ok*!!

The question is, can you make a full 3d cab with working controls, accurate physics, and correct sounds to the actual locomotive. That is how most payware trains usually look, and to payware quality, the texturing must look breath taking.

Freeware though, you can do it how you like it and to the limit of your skill.

quick question, why another GP40-2?(Gtrax portland terminal comes with one incase you didn't know) why not have a variation like a widecab or do something like GP50 or 60?

First I'd like to point out that what I'm modeling at the moment is not in fact a GP40-2 but a GP40, although I suppose there would be no real way of knowing just from the picture;
Secondly, I'd like to model the details specific to each roadname, rather than simply repaint one model again and again;
And thirdly, I've always sort of liked the GP40's and I have the most reference material for them as compared to other EMD models.

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback regarding offering this as payware. I want to include some of the features JP pointed out (such as 3d cab, high-quality textures, and normal mapping) regardless of whether the model is released as payware or freeware, so I don't think that that would be too big of an issue. Anyhow, here is tonight's progress on the GP40- I'm still using a mirror modifier for most of the model so the cab is not yet detailed, but I think soon I'll be able to move onto finishing the cab and then onto grab irons and handrails. The trucks are also just about finished, just a bit of poly cutting to do.
