Chessie SD35

Hi Folks,

Just a quick foray into copying a unit and creating/modifying my first new RW skin - to figure out the tools and what the process entails. It seems pretty straight forward. While the B&O Mountain Sub route is my favorite route - I always thought the colors on the locomotives were a tad overdone. IMHO - the GP40 nailed it. While photos aren't always the best source for color matching - I did find an image that seems work pretty well for color sampling. I added a seamless metal base texture underneath the color for more visual interest and depth. This is just a quick and dirty start - we'll see how it goes - I really want to tone down the wild mary circus units.

Looks nice! Welcome to the deep end of the pool. As the author of about a ga-jillion re-paints I love to try to estimate the colors as they once were and to say there is really no right and wrong as the Sun is the arbitrator to all except the most dedicated roads as far as color goes. As a long time watcher of both UP and CN if you watch long enough you'll see almost anything sometimes in the same lashup. Have fun and look forward to seeing some of your stuff in the library. !!*ok*!! !!*ok*!! !*brav*!

Hi Buzz,

Thanks - noticed your name on a massive number of repaints - nice work as well.

Hmm - odd - the mismatched yellow steps aren't painted on any texture contained in the texture directory. Must be a global somewhere - I can't think of a reason why they would spawn a new draw call - for a new texture sheet - just for that.

Yep - concur - color is subjective - no real right or wrong.

Yeah - HIS also included a couple of unbranded boxes in the set - probably need official company rights for Steam - I'd like to fix those as well.

Appreciate the comments.
*!!wink!!*

Scott

Look in the SD35 Engine Grills_nm and nmc file. I think your steps are there.

Hi Scott,

Your guess is spot on. In many cases, every single use of a copyrighted logo/name needs to approved by the license holder. In addition to that, we have set ourselves the rule to limit the brands included to those owned by one parent company. Just limits the risk for us of having to pull stuff from the shelves if a company says "no" at some point or if a license can't get renewed (which has happened on occasion, Virgin trains comes to mind). Which is why you can see PRR, NYC, PC and NH together (all owned by Penn Central's successor company) but none other, or no NS-owned names alongside the numerous the CSX predecessors. Just as a couple examples.

Happy repainting! !*cheers*!

Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the explanation - I'll take a look when I get a chance.

Just a thought - if HIS had them all painted up and ready to go - then stripped the logo for packaging on Steam - could HIS not release them as a freeware update to the product - distributed outside of Steam?

Scott

Hi Folks,

Knocked a couple more out.

Image

Quick Question: I copied the (5) directories for each of the paints - then updated the respective "bin" files with all the new naming and pathing information. Somethings off with the two WM paints - even though they have a truck texture in their local directory - apparently they aren't using it - would anyone know where the truck texture [Bogie_Texture.TgPcDx] is being called on these two locomotives?

I don't think I did anything differently and the other paints work.

Thanks.

Regards,
Scott

Can anyone tell me if these units were released? Very nice work!
