Penn Central GP40

I guess here's a quick one that should be done by tomorrow. Since the model isn't of the highest quality, it might just be worthwhile to use it for AI in scenarios. I thought it would be a necessary staple however, since the NYCS ordered around 300 of them. *!!wink!!*

I also made the long hood have proper Penn Central markings in the cab view (sourced from the old PC SD40 reskins on the library, specifically the one with the large logo and lettering). This means for installation this repaint will be a requirement and you'll need to place the cab geo in the proper cabview folder.

The last thing to do is get rid of the ditchlight flares.

If memory serves those are child objects so they should be easy to get rid of them.

I had thought the same, until this happened.

I went to the point of deleting all traces of the ditchlight flare, yet it still activates them when I turn on the headlights. **!!bang!!**

I am assuming (something you should never do) that this is the DTG one. Look in the lights folder. There is a separate bin for the ditchlights. Try just .xx it out and see what happens.

Well there is a separate bin for the flares, (even a separate node for the actual housings, which is by far the best thing about this model, customizability).

I tried seeing if I could redirect the reference in the engine.bin file to a "PC" version of the ditchlight.bin (in order to not break the ditchlights on every reskin that uses this model), and then deleted the ditchlight geo reference in order for the flare not to show up in game.

But to no avail.
I feel like I'm missing something, but I can't seem to put my finger on it.

What's making me even more confused is the fact that the editor seems to accept what I did, but not in the driver mode.

Could be scripted and you may not be able to remove them. Only thing you could possibly do is find the texture being used and completely alpha it out. Problem is if they are also used in other models they won't show anymore.

Yeah I tried that but then it messed with the main headlight as well.

I think this thing is a poltergeist of some sort. I tried turning off one bin file after another this morning after turning off the files in the .ap and no matter what I did the darn ditchlights still flashed. I sure don't know what's driving them.

But did the ditchlights go away also? if they did then it's all scripting and can't be altered. If they didn't go away then the ditchlight texture file could be some obscure file referenced by the script and we will never find it because the scripts are encrypted.
PS. The Clinchfield GP38 ditchlights still work even though the model doesn't have them either. So DTG didn't even try to deactivate those and used them as AI only in the original release scenarios.

Well if that's the case, then it is a real shame, since it means pre 90s geeps can't be reskinned properly.

They may do it on purpose to create their own locomotives for sale but in my opinion they just don't think about that stuff. It should of been caught in testing but again it falls through the cracks.

I doubt it was done on purpose. Further if any of you are really interested since DTM made this model and they are very user friendly to us in my experience I suggest you contact them and you will probably be able to resolve this problem for you.

I didn't realize that it was DTM !!**sorry**!! , I thought further up in the post it was said they were DTG models. Definitely reach out to DTM and if they can they should be able to point in the right direction.

If it's the GP40, wouldn't that be G-Trax instead who made the model? Based on stuff like the horn and couplers, it looks like the model from Portland Terminal that got released as a standalone a couple years back.

DTG obviously has the GP40-2, but that's a later model with some fairly significant differences, and the closest DTM have ever done is a GP50.

Yeah it's the G-Trax GP40, but I think it has the same problem as the Kuju SD40.
