WIP - Wabash 40ft. Boxcar Repaint

Unread postby TDHenderson » Mon May 23, 2011 8:36 pm

Here is a WIP of the Michael Steffan's 40ft. boxcar in the Wabash "Steam Era" basic scheme. The prototype has the car numbers to the right of the door, which there was an easy way to shift them over.

Am going to release this dirty one and a clean one too.

Regards,
Trevor

After final tweaks here are two versions, one "newish" and the other "used".

Any thoughts or comments before I start to package them? Go easy, its my first time. *!embar*!

Have a question ... on the post you made looking for a suitable font the boxcar had the Wabash logo .. do you need the flag ?

Looks good ( and would'nt look out of place here > http://www.shorpy.com/node/10461 )

Just a balance thing, I'd move the WABASH name up a ways, roughly splitting the area above the reporting mark line. It would look a little bit better IMHO. And yes, put the flag on it!

Thanks for the comments. Yea, the whole thing looks out of balance because of the autonumbering position. If it was over on the right side it would match the prototype.

This particular rendition, according to my research (thin resources so far), is the Steam Era scheme which had just the WABASH on the left and the reporting marks on the right with no flag. The next 40 footer I am working on is the Transition Era scheme with the flag on the right side. On this scheme the WABASH was raised higher on the left (Steam Era almost centered top to bottom). Once done with that one, and toning down the autonumbering font color on the weathered versions, the 40 footers will be released together.

Next will be the 50 ft. model in Transition Era scheme plus the "Heartland" Diesel Era scheme.

I am having some issues with the autonumbering for the heavily weathered version. I made a copy of the 10 number .TgPcDx files, renamed them, touched them up in Photoshop, saved, and changed the .bin file for the numbers and the boxcar but get a "Missing Texture" in place of the numbers.

As soon as I figure this out I will get them ready for uploading. !*hp*!

OK, dusting this off, here is a shot on the RWA Lakeside route. Since I cannot shift the autonumbering over to the right side it will release as-is, probably in a pack with the other versions. Weathered will follow after I figure out why my toned down letters do not show up.

This will look at home on the Lafayette route too.

When working with the GreatNortherner boxcars, and when you do custom lettering colors, it is best to move the custom number textures and the 'romwhite.bin' (or whatever) file to the folder the car is in. Edit the .bin to point to the local path. This way, when you pass your model on, the end users get the modified textures. The idea of having the fonts in an independent folder is a good one when using stock textures, but does doesn't allow a lot of flexibility.

Actually no, in the sense that community members are doing this on a voluntary basis, and there is no schedule. So they work as they please and release their work when it's ready. No one here works for DTG or is paid for doing freeware.

This is the second time you mention volunteer work being "overdue". This sounds very demanding, unless I interpret the word incorrectly.
