Railfan722's Repaints

Unread postby Railfan722 » Sun Feb 02, 2020 11:23 am

Rather than starting up a new thread for each repaint project, I've decided just to have this one. First out of the paint shop this morning is a request from Buzz, a 40' boxcar lettered for Monon:

Requests are always welcome, but keep in mind that I (for the moment) will be sticking mainly to freeware.

At the request of jpmackay on the DTG forums, I've done a repaint of the MSTS conversion Super Dome into the Great Northern scheme. Still needs some weathering, and a few other car numbers, but it's almost there.

This is intended to fill a gap in the Empire Builder set for those of us who do not live in the US, or were not able to get the payware pack from Steam. To accompany this, I'm hoping to do a complete retexture of Rick's freeware set to match with the more accurate colors seen here. Omaha Orange is one of the hardest colors to get right, and I'm not sure this is entirely accurate, although I think it's close enough. This is almost done, although there is one thing I can't seem to track down in all the texture files - why the roof transitions from almost black at one end to blue on the other. So far, I haven't been able to find it, and I've looked everywhere. !*hp*! Any tips?

Tonight's progress. Still sorting out the bins on the retexture of Rick's cars, but the dome is in a state where I can consider it almost done. The green is doing some weird things on the lightweights, although I've done some things with the alphas to fix that. In general, the colors appear a lot lighter in these pictures than they do in game, and that is probably down to some of the settings I'm using with regard to the light intensity, etc. sliders in the Options menu. Since yesterday, the dome has gotten a new lick of Pullman Green, courtesy of Scalecoat model paints, a new shade of grey on the roof, and the window ribs have been completely eliminated from the exterior texture to prevent the awful effect where they curve towards the end of the car. The rest of the lightweight set should be ready Soon™, and the Monon boxcar (no, I didn't forget!) has one or two things left to wrap up and then I'll put a download link up.

This set of coaches should give you the ability to run mostly accurate consists for both the 1947 and 1955-56 version of the Empire Builder, as well as perhaps the Western Star if you can live with all the coaches having the "Empire Builder" name on the sides. The summer 1955 train was a transition period from the 1951 'Mid-Century' Empire Builder to the newly dome-equipped train, and a change in power took place from 2 E7s to an A-B-B-A set of F7s to cope with the extra weight through the Rockies. It ran with three domes, two in the front and one towards the rear, until the winter 1955 season, when the Great Domes made their first appearance - these remained on the train until Amtrak replaced it with Superliners in November 1979. It's unclear to me if the 1956 train ever would have made the trip behind one of the electrics, as the ventilation system from what I can tell opened on 31 July 1956. I'll leave that up to the scenario writers to decide. If you want complete consist lists for 1955 versions of the train and beyond, I'd recommend you check this out: http://www.greatnorthernempire.net/inde ... nsists.htm

The last changes I wanted to make to the Monon car have indeed been completed, so I've packed it up and you can download it here while it gets uploaded to the library: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1CsItJ ... LaxnpZt-BD

It's been a fairly long time now since the last update - !!**sorry**!! about that. I've had a nasty cold for the last few days, and I haven't had much computer time recently. This week's progress report: firstly, the GN set is out here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1k0Q-r ... ReSfjMSqpS These, the Monon boxcar, and the NYC boxcar should all make it to Bob this weekend. Secondly, there are a couple new things I'd like to show off.
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46128--120.51093_12-00-34.jpg

Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46138--120.51155_12-00-13.jpg

A new NYC boxcar at the request of jpetersjr - I've decided to go for the post-1959 jade green as the other common schemes have already been done by SeinfeldRules in their wonderful 36' and 40' boxcar mega pack. The other thing that's in the paint shed at the moment is an Illinois Central Gulf N8 caboose for all you midwestern fans. Compare with the real thing:
icgn8.jpg

As ever, heavily WIP - your feedback is welcome and appreciated. I'm working on toning the orange down right now. I'm debating how heavy to go with the weathering - ICG orange did not hold up particularly well under sunlight, and these things were rarely washed. The plan right now is to do 3 road numbers, each with a different weathering level. Many thanks to Pete Williard from railsimfonts.com for his "Illcentive" font that I have used for the railhead logo. In other news, I finally got the AP Sky & Weather pack to work on the CVP so all of the screenshots you see on here should have much better lighting and cloud textures.

Tonight's status report - 3 caboose variants more or less done. Light weathering is some rust streaks, and not too much else. Moderate has slightly more faded paint, and of course more rust. Heavy might have a few leaks in the roof, very rusty body panels, and a little hint of Conrail blue peeking through.

All that needs to be done right now is to get rid of the autonumbers, so look out for these sometime soon in the library. I think I might take a short break from painting - I haven't had a ton of time to actually play the game, and I've just downloaded the very nice Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway route from our friends across the pond at UKTrainsim. I'll get a download link for these up at some point in the near future.

It's been a while, but I haven't been idle this whole time. After looking through the Penn Central Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment I have located my next few repaint projects. The passenger stuff is approaching completion, bar weathering and alternate names/numbers, and I'm still researching Penn Central's NE-5 cabooses. If someone wants to do a PC E8 to haul these, be my guest - I had very loose plans for one, but that hasn't even reached the research phase yet, let alone actually painting one. For fans of the Bergen, I've again got very loose plans to make a semi-fictitious repaint of DTG's U36B into an Erie-Lackawanna U36C, although that is very far in the future at the moment. In the meantime, here's some photos of what's emerged from the shed as of late:
Amtrak Ex-NH Parlor/Coaches
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46091--120.51132_12-00-08.jpg

Penn Central Smoothside Coaches, PC Green
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46094--120.51172_12-00-23.jpg

Penn Central Smoothside Coaches, Ex-PRR patchout
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46096--120.51152_12-00-16.jpg

Penn Central Stainless Steel Coaches, PC Silver/Black
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46091--120.51198_12-00-05.jpg

These aren't meant to be perfect representations, and there's a fair chance I may go back and re-do these once I get DTM's Broadway Limited pack as those are much more accurate to the type of coach PC would have inherited. Until then, these will have to do. The ex-PRR one is the only one to have weathering at the moment, and the Amtrak and PC stainless will likely not receive any as stainless steel, as the name implies, doesn't really rust or pick up dirt all that well. These will be mostly complete sets; the Amtrak coaches stem from the MSTS conversion set, and will come with the parlor/baggage and coach cars, the PC green will come with a coach, diner, and sleeper, and ex-PRR will have just the sleeper and coach because my research seems to strongly indicate these were the only ones that weren't fully repainted. Amtrak versions of these may come at some point, and PC versions of the parlors may as well, but I wouldn't count on it at the moment. Cheers! !*cheers*!

P.S: I haven't forgotten about the unreleased stuff - I sent them over to Bob a little while ago but I haven't gotten a response back. If they're not up soon, I'll send them to Chacal to get them into the library.

Something new, fresh from the shed:
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46108--120.51071_12-00-13.jpg
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46113--120.51039_12-00-20.jpg

The PC version is very rough, and it's something I knocked out in around 20-30 minutes just to get it in game and have some pictures of it. The Trailiner version is much closer to completion, but there's a slight problem I've encountered. The lone color photo I can find, which appears to have been colorized from a B&W picture, shows all the lettering as being that orange color, but all of the models I can find have it in white. Compare:
Image

I think I'll stick with the orange, but I'd like to hear y'alls thoughts on this. As a side note, I spent way too long figuring out how to layer mask last night for this project, although I think it turned out well. While the real deal had massive metal plates welded to the sides with vinyl decals applied, I have zero experience with creating child objects so for now at least everything will just be painted on. These cabooses were pretty much exclusively used on the Hartford-Boston Trailiner trains, so these will be perfect for the Springfield Line. !*cheers*!

Matt,

I think you'll find that the yellowing of the letters is due to the colorcast high in the photos. All the information I have says. white on red.

For what its worth.

Cheers.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

Captain's Log, Stardate 4513.3
What have I been up to these last few weeks? Firstly, huge thanks to Kevin for the New Haven info - I didn't grab a picture before posting this, but the change has been made. It'll be a bit more time before those come out, though, because a different project has been taking up a ton of my time:
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46038--120.40019_12-01-28.jpg

As you can see, there's still a little work to do to de-E7ify this, but it's coming along nicely. A Metra version is also planned, but these won't actually be released for another few weeks until the TruRail E8 enhancement comes out as I don't want people to have to redownload it, and it comes with some other bits and bobs that make it more accurate to the RTA-spec E8s. Many thanks to Buzz and Martin Ashwill for the scripts that hide away the portholes. When the enhancement is released, I also want to do some RTA bilevels to go with these, so stay tuned until then. In other vaguely related news, I decided to make a project during quarantine to figure out how to hide nodes on models, and I'd say it went well
Screenshot_Columbia Valley Pacific Railway(V1a)_49.46124--120.51076_12-00-17.jpg

I was going to have a go at one of the Budd gallery cars, but I have zero experience with the child objects required to do up the nameplates on the sides. No idea what I'll use this skill for, but it's something to consider now at least. Stay healthy, folks!

An addendum to my last post - today, I've done some work on a repaint of the SS/JR cylindrical hoppers into Canadian National 370708, one of a series of promotional cars showcasing Canada's industry. Adorned on the side of the car is the chemical formula OCN(CH₂)₆NCO, the chemical formula for hexamethylene diisocyanate which is found in certain paints, hence the rainbow coloring. I hope to do the full series of cars, although I'm waiting for Larry's Feather River boxcar reskins with the side child objects to come out before I do the newsprint and fruit cars. If you want some more reading on these, this website: http://tracksidetreasure.blogspot.com/2 ... -1971.html is a great source of info.

As per the prototype, only 1 side of the car has been given the special paint. The real deal was a 1966 ACF hopper I believe, while the model here is one of the later Hawker-Siddeley cars, but it's close enough for me.

For the rest of the promotional series, I know that the MaineLines 57' Mechanical Reefer set will probably work for the beef reefer, and as I said at the beginning I plan on waiting until his Feather River boxcar with some improvements is released. However, if you know of any models that are similar to the newsprint and fruit cars (if you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the link above), do let me know as it makes my job a bit easier :D

That hopper turned out great!

Since you already did all of the work on the 'plain' side, are you going to do a repaint of the standard hoppers in that wet noodle scheme?

Thanks! Yes, that is absolutely doable. I'll have to do only a few static numbers, though, because the autonumbers are too high up on the body. They'll probably be both in the pictured red and the later grey lettering, so stay tuned for those sometime soon.
