Trash Decals for Route Builders

Unread postby tagsdm » Tue Oct 17, 2017 12:27 pm

Gustavtime (on Youtube) makes extensive use of the litter decal that comes with the North Jersey Coast route for his Vernon, CA route, so I thought I'd try to make a few trash, junk and litter decals for my own tiny industrial district route starting with the NJC asset...

Not bad...

These look very cool! Nice work.

Does this technique work OK on uneven terrain, or it just for flat terrain?

Thanks, Wayne, they do work on uneven terrain, but may require some fiddling for best effect. They can be sized and tweaked with the yellow "handles" as per the original. Use the gizmos to move and rotate on all axes. The top screenshot is a fairly uneven hillside.

Question is, can these be used without needing any payware route?

North Jersey Coast would be required for the GeoPcDx. So basically these are "repaints" of the original.

Excellent, well done, we don't have much litter and trash to play with on our routes, so, anything like this would be wonderful.

I wondered if you could do an old newspaper, and some flattened cardboard, at all, if you can't, don't worry, it's just little items you see in real life that we could do with in the game.

Thanks everyone. The only trifle I'm having is that decals can "reflect", for lack of a better word, on the lower parts of engine and car wheels, axles and pilots sometimes. See circled in yellow...

Not a big deal, and can be minimized with careful positioning.

Also, what section would something like this fit into? Maybe just Miscellaneous.

What do ya mean, where would these assets go?

Well, if it's just litter and trash decals, then, I'd suggest just ordinary trackside clutter, in a scenery folder, in an Assets folder, probably named after you, and we can tick the box in editor when we go into any route and use your content.

The litter decals on the front of that locomotive, are they permanently 'stuck on', or, can they be moved manually? It's a very good idea, anyway, I've never considered putting litter on locomotive ploughs and suchlike, that's very inventive..... **!!bow!!**

Oops, sorry, Steve. I meant where do they go in the RWA library if I upload them. Of course, they're just assets in your Railworks install.

It's hard to explain in words what the decals do, so please check out one of Gustavtime's vids. About 6 minutes in you can see clearly what's happening...

Judicious positioning can reduce this effect, though. What do you think?

The effect on other objects and passing trains can be minimized by editing the Height section in the "Detail Level Generation Range" of the decal blueprint. :D

Hi Hack,
You have my full attention as my question may be related - does it affect as well cast shadows (...to give you a specific context, I'm not fond of a shadow casted by the loading retractable platfom on my GSC-flatcar that I use for my TOFC packages; any ideas?

Thanks for helping the newbies **!!bow!!**

I’m not entirely clear on what you’re asking. Decals won’t project shadows, nor will shadows cast by other objects be affected by the decal.
Cheers!

Oh, I'm sorry too, I understand now, yes, in the Miscellaneous Files Category.

Not too sure what this guy has done exactly, it looks a bit over ambitious to me, I think he's trying to project the litter being wrapped around the wheels as the locomotive and wagons drive over the top of it, I think he's just trying to show off really, in my opinion. *!lol!*
