[WIPs] SCLJim (updated 5/26)

Unread postby SCLJim » Wed Mar 02, 2011 5:06 pm

Hi guys, I hope its o.k. but I thought I would just start a general thread for everything I've been working on.

Anyway I'll start off with a Magor wood rack I've been working on. It was originally started for MSTS but I decided to go ahead and upgrade it for Railworks. Some of the higher res details have been added in addition to new trucks. I have a few other things to rework and I plan on increasing the texture resolution which is 1k atm. So far the biggest hurdle I have is getting this in game as I use Maya to do all my work. Right now I'm using Blender as a go-between which seems to be working out o.k. on a few test objects but has been somewhat slow going. Now that I've been able to get simple objects in game, I now need to figure out animating in Blender as I cant import any animations from Maya, that I know of. That would just be too easy I guess. *!rolleyes!*

Another model I've been working on. The U18B is a little further behind and needs a few more things added/reworked.

Thanks everyone. As far as road names for the U18B, definitely Coast Line all the way! I'm not sure about any others. Right now I'll just be happy getting a working version in game.

I have a few questions..

1. Was the ability to use instanced objects ever put in game? I've read two different things on that. The docs state that you can, then I read a forum post that said it was never implemented?

2. Loco doors. I'm thinking about removing them, making a really high res set to bake into a normal map and go with that. I just feel like the budget is better spent somewhere else. Especially for doors that are actually flush with the body. Any opinions on that?

well personaly i prefer the doors that have some 3d shape to them like on the payware locos. the option is you could make them in 3D or you can just have them painted on. if there is another way i don't know about it.

I used to love to see and hear those ACL/SCL Uboats running through my hometown in south Alabama. They just had a different personality than the off-the-shelf EMD's.

Sweet *!!wink!!* Need more the older U-Boats--plus the accompanying "sounds"--unlike anything from EMD. Love the authenticity of the recycled Blomberg trucks! !!*ok*!!

#1 ... Instancing is not supported ... though I guess I'd better say " At this time "

#2 ... doors are far baked .. extruded looks fake and stupid .

There's also no true sort ... and you'll no doubt find a few other things that'll like or not as the case may be , some very cool things are possible ( better than your in wildest dreams in a train game ) some things that you take for granted in other game renderers are not to be seen .

Nice Geo :D

Have fun
