Donner Pass Locomotive and Cabeese Texture Replacements

Unread postby TheRailfan98 » Tue Feb 16, 2016 11:56 pm

I finally decided to start doing some texture replacements for Donner Pass to brighten up those way too dark textures. I won't do the F7 since it's Black Widow livery but I am doing everything else (C44-9W, SD40T-2, SD40-2, GP9, SW1500). As for cabeese I'm probably just going to paint one up in a legitimate SP livery and copy it to all 6, although I may decide to find multiple livery variants and apply them to each. So far I've finished the C44-9W, so here's a screenshot for you to enjoy *!greengrin!*

I'm going to be busy the next couple days and this weekend, so I may not finish up everything until next week.

Great idea! Its worth noting that if you're going to work on the SD40/SD40T-2 variants that the paint scheme they are represented in should not have the white sill stripe along their walkways. !!*ok*!! Just a thought while you've got the 'ol can of paint out.

Thank you for pointing that out, I may have missed it otherwise !*salute*!

I am also leaning towards doing 6 caboose variants since there are 6 included with the route. I've picked out 6 possibilities, but I'm open to suggestions. While most of these are on bay window cabeese, I figured I may do them for fun anyway.

Thoughts on these? Are there any I should replace with something you like better? I will be figuring out which caboose will be applied to which one in game based on their distribution in Donner's scenarios.

The texture on the C44-9W is excellent!

I like your effort, but please consider these as stand-alone updates and not direct replacements. Some of us may prefer the choice. I like the dirty, sooted look of the existing skins, but would (not) turn down the opportunity to add some "cleaned up" skins as well. Just saying....

What the Railroad Police caboose for? Protecting valuable TOFC from theft and pilfering?

Any will do, but my preference inclines toward plain standard schemes with subtle weathering.

There were never Speed Lettered caboose?

PS: there is a SP-style bay window caboose in the game now, it comes with the Western Pacific route.
It doesn't have the wagon wheel antenna nor the roof mounted marker light, but otherwise follows SP prototype quite closely.

If you really want the engines as stand alone I can do that no problem. :D

The police caboose was basically SP's attempt to deter theft or hopping trains. SP police crew or agents would ride in the caboose and an SP police car paced the train. As far as I'm aware SP never speed lettered any cabeese, I just found almost every "modern" caboose livery SP had. The reason I'm doing 6 liveries is because they just copy pasted the 6 colored ones from Kuju, so I will definitely make the default caboose standard SP due to it being used most in scenarios. The other cabeese aren't widely used in many scenarios from what I've found, so I'll put the "special" liveries on those. I'm mainly doing the cabeese for fun as most will end up fictional, but once I get Feather River maybe I'll try painting it up SP *!!wink!!*

I second that.
I don't mind dirty S.P. locos, but as someone that grew up in Ca I know they weren't always so nasty as others seem to think.

There is still no problem with using these as drop-in replacements. However if standalone it can lead to some incompatibilities for scenario writers.

Just making sure we're all on the same page here...

Standalone = These repaints will co-exist with the original units, and both can be used in the same scenario.

Drop In = These new textures overwrite the original ones.

I like the ability to mix and match, so I would prefer if Brandon can do these as Standalone units. I think that would give the most choice. The SP I remember from the early 90's had filthy SD40 variants, and shiny new C44's. Being able to recreate that in scenarios would make me quite happy.

Openrailer, you can still use RW_Tools to switch the locos around in any existing scenarios.

What I may just do for the locomotives is include a drop-in replacement option along with the actual stand-alone repaints for anyone that would like to simply replace their textures. I should be able to get another loco done tonight so stay tuned *!!wink!!*

Wow, that sure brings out the detail on the grills etc!
What we need is slightly weathered versions of those too.
And... SSW
I know, I'm being greedy.
Since I have over 800hrs into redoing Donner, I feel I can ask for the world... *!greengrin!*

Maybe I'll dirty them up a bit once I learn how to weather properly... Didn't think of adding SSW, but since one of the cabeese will be Cotton Belt I guess I could do these in Cotton Belt too. Just for you *!greengrin!*

Just finished the GP9...I think it's bed time... !*roll-laugh*!

These repaints of yours look sharp and crisp.

Were the Tunnel Motors not equipped with the typical SP cluster of headlights? Or did RSC back then choose not to model this characteristic SP detail?
