Inner City Classic Buildings Recapped.

Unread postby jpetersjr » Thu Jan 21, 2016 7:31 pm

Well, since someone locked my old thread, time to start a new one.

Introducing a new building for a update of the older pack very soon.

Inner City Building 25

Or better known as Sams Cafe.

It was built in the summer of 1931 and opened for business in the spring of 1932.

Re-edited the building some, made a new texture side panel and got rid of the extra doors.

Nice.
The lettering looks strange to me, it looks like it was painted directly on concrete.

Yes it was, some places actually did paint their lettering back then.

This probably would have been a little mom and pop restaurant, would have actually been cheaper for the owner to just paint their letters, instead of trying to order a sign during the depression since chances are, they wouldn't have had very much money.

There were many professional sign painters available during the depression. The word here is "cheap" owners of business's painted there own signs. Many customers would shy away from "do it yourself signs", on public business's, as it show the owners cheap. Many cities have standards for the quality of ones signs. In many cases, this one would be condemned and ordered to be improved. It takes years of practice to master the art of hand lettering. Unfortunately, like a lot of trades, the average person thinks they know it all.
The building looks great. You have improved within the last few postings. Go back and look at some of your first buildings.
Another tip: Make 4-5 layouts of the sign on the building, pick out the best, and use it. Better yet, look at other professional signs in your area for ideas.
Keep up the great work. !!*ok*!!

True. The sign likely would have been white letters on a dark or red, or perhaps red on a much lighter background so as to be seen from afar. As it is, red on grey is a bit of a strain on the eyes.

Also true is that your modeling has improved a great deal since your early days. Keep it up. :D
Cheers!
