I think it's being worked on; was just discussing this topic with them. Glad to hear the license would include all the past road names. Does that also mean they could do things like Pere Marquette or IC? I don't have any experience with licensing names/logos/artwork. Not that our kind and talented repainters won't be doing most of the big names for us anyway (love those guys!) !*cheers*! Still, as a CSX fan, there is some mysterious "satisfaction" in owning a licensed virtual sculpture just like owning the licensed physical models (I own one Chessie System N-scale locomotive; I think it's a U30B or something along those lines). I'm sure you UP, BNSF, and NS fans know what I mean.

Hey Skoda, my apologies for duplicating your post *!embar*! ; I missed that post when I was reading through here.

Hi Tori,

Long time! :D

IIRC, you need to specify in their licensing agreement which roads you plan on tinkering with. I believe this only applies to commercial projects, but it doesn't hurt to ask 'em about that too.
Cheers!

The following "main" roads (the ones I know) are under the CSX name a thus need a license: CSX, Seaboard Coast Line (SCL), Baltimore and Ohio (B&O), Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O), Western Maryland (WM), Chessie System, Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad (RF&P), Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE), Atlantic Coast Line (ACL), Pere Marquette Railway (PM), Clinchfield Railroad (CRR), and Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N).

What about Western & Atlantic (W&A), which was the line between Atlanta, GA and Chattanooga, TN before the L&N took over, now CSX?
Also the line of the infamous Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War.

According to this listing at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_GP9) the C&O bought 363 GP9's, making them the largest purchaser of any railroad. Combined with the 194 the B&O owned minus units lost through the years, it looks like Chessie System would have had at least a couple hundred of them still running in 1972. There are lots of photos around of them in Chessie paint. Personally, I've only witnessed a couple of them on the Alleghany in Chessie paint but during the C&O years there was nothing else but GP's on this road!

There are dozens of photos online here: http://www.trainweb.org/chessiephotos/html/GP9.html

And here are three photos showing the typical C&O paint schemes:

Do any class one railroads own them

Norfolk Southern owns a crapload of them. Only thing is, they are chopped down with the dynamic brakes moved to the front, prime-mover removed, cabless - slugs. They are mostly yard duty, but every once in a while, you will see one and it's mother deadheading between terminals.

@Hawk - when was there an actual Western & Atlantic railroad company? I know thats what the subdivision is still called, but I thought it was always leased to a third-party operator. L&N is the earliest operator that I can remember.

@Tori - I still got an N-Scale brass SD-60 in NS paint sitting on my desk, with an Atlas GP9 that I chop-shopped into the aforementioned slug that actually suppies power to the "mother". Nice piece of art. I've always wondered though if RSC has ever thought about trying to put one of their digital sculptures into one of those new-fangled 3-D printers (think Jurrasic Park 3) and see what they come up with? They could make a ton selling static replica's to sit on some trainfan's desk. :)

Well, I guess since you put it like that... *!greengrin!*
The trackage and RoW for that line has always been owned and controlled by the state of Georgia. It was built that way starting in 1838 (construction was from 1838 to 1850) and is still, to this day owned by the state.
The W&A (Western & Atlantic Railroad Company) was the name of the railroad company that leased the trains and track.

The lease on the track was taken over by the NC&StL (subsidiary of the L&N - subsidiary of the ACL - subsidiary of FLS) in 1890, which has since been absorbed by CSXT.

The current lease was signed by CSXT in 1986 and expires in 2019
