Yermo To LV sounds kind of neat, The rest are extremely boring. That comes from experience. I'm from that area originally.

Well yes and no scenery-wise. On the Yuma sub (Colton,CA to Yuma,AZ) the western half is the most interesting with beaumont hill to climb, the desert/agricultural field mix of the coachella valley with mountain ranges on each side and going by the Salton sea.

But Salton Sea to Yuma is flat and boring desert with not much to see along it. I'd prefer the route in the late 1970s/early '80s when the Southern Pacific still ran on it (now UP) and the now-defunct Eagle Mountain Railroad connected to it.....

The needles sub (Barstow,CA to Needles,CA.) I agree would be the most visually boring of all the routes. All desert with some grades to climb.

Colton to Yuma is a long ways. Colton is basically industrial suburbs, you're in desert once you get out of town. Then Banning Pass, parallel I10 until Indio, then south thru Coachella and Imperial Vally's. I used to watch the trains run thru Indio when driving to or from Phoenix. The tracks run right behind the Denny's there on the main drag in Indio. I think the scenery thru Imperial valley is actually better than from Colton to Indio. Lots of farmland and towns along the way. Banning to Indio is fraught with sand storms. Wonder if all the wind generators could be modeled in. Past Niland it gets boring, then to Yuma the last miles past the Colorado River turn nice. (yes, I have traveled the highways along these routes a lot, especially from LA to Phoenix)

Maybe it's just me, but I find the Arizona desert has much more diversity and life to it. (not sure why I think that !*don-know!* )

Barstow to anywhere is just like Cajon. Bleah. Same with Yermo- Vegas.

I would like to see either the Surfliner or Cajon extended so that you could run from Los Angeles/San Diego to Barstow.

I'm not very educated with the Feather River Route, but one thing I do know about is the famous Keddie Wye. Is this going to be incorporated into this route?

Since the wye is basically in the middle, it would be impossible not to have.
Cheers!

Yeah but doesn't it split into two different directions? Would the WIP route be able to follow both directions of the Wye?

I wasn't planning on going very far up the NEC from Keddie, so I only add a little DEM to that area. I'll have to check and see how far I can take that leg. But the Wye will definitely be in the route. As a matter of fact you can see it on the last route map I posted (it's just a little stub right now) along with the Williams loop a little further down the line.

Edit: hmmm I might be able to re-gen the DEM and add a little more in that area to extend that leg. I'll have to look into that. I don't know if I'll take on the whole NEC (another 110 miles of track) but I'll take a look and see how far I want to go.

It could, but then the NEC is not the Feather River. :D

Your Right Marc,

it's not the NEC it's the NCE (WP 1968.) Or as UP called it in 1982 (Mainline Keddie to Bieber.)

my bad

This is looking like it will be a very nice route when done. The MSTS version is one of my favorites and it'll be neat to see this one for Train Simulator 2014 as well. I do have one question though - are the two routes by John Lippia still available? I went to the Official Willamette Pass thread and all the download links he posted were dead? Thanks!
