Some more progress from yesterday.

EMC E1 Progress 11 A.jpg

EMC E1 Progress 11 B.jpg

P.S, I'm still having some trouble with posting screenshots. Some screenshots upload fine here and others I'm still getting a 404 bad request error when trying to upload them. It's like the forum doesn't like some of the pictures.
Does anyone have any idea why the forum would be acting like that???

That's looking very good indeed. You've made quite a lot of progress in a fairly short time. Good work!

My only problem right now is I can't get 3D Crafter to UV Map correctly. Keep getting a script out of range error message when I try to UV Map something precisely, such as the paint scheme and later the gauges inside the cab.

I am using I believe the same version of 3d crafter, do you have a idea what the problem could be.

If I can't figure this out it will make it impossible to apply the gauges later.

That sometimes happens when you try to map the entire circumference of a cylinder. 3DC gets confused, perhaps because of the coordinates at either end being equal (just a guess). The solution is to map half of the cylinder at a time. However, I haven't had that happen for a long time, and maybe it's been fixed. I'm using 9.2.2.

You might also need to do a little fix to allow 3DC to use more memory (with a large model, this fix is essential to be able to export the model). It's explained on my blog (the tips and tricks page).

Today I'll see if I can find that fix.

Of course I'm not too worried about UV Mapping at the moment since I haven't started on the texturing yet. Too busy on the body and also re-editing of the body.

After I finish on this engine I believe then I'll be ready to do a steam locomotive with you whenever you're ready to work on the tutorial again and I'm not busy on this engine.

Today I did the front windows as well, they were tricky to shape and I might have to go back sometime as well and re-edit them.

After I finish the basic body and do the wheels and trucks I'm going to attempt to get a simple version of the engine into the sim and running.

It will be in only one livery, Santa Fe War Bonnet Red.

I'll leave it up to the repainters to do any other liveries.

It will be released though and my plan for it is for it to be freeware.

Still have a lot more detail to add though, once I start to work on the cab everything inside will be high detail, or at least high enough to where it still won't cause a problem in Railworks.

My only question for later is does anyone know of a place to find pictures of vintage F and E-Unit gauge faces for when I start to make the gauges.

.....Today after I get home from work I plan to start on the wheels and trucks.

If anyone has any pictures of a EMD E-Unit trucks, those will defiantly help in building the trucks and figuring out if the engine had traction motors, or if it used some kind of turbine and drive axel. My guess is it had a turbine and didn't have traction motors back then.

Actually I wish I had some manufacture drawings and blueprints for this engine. The very fact that it's coming out this good is a surprise to me, since this is my first engine and I haven't ever built anything this complex before.

Also, I'm going to be starting on the ladders as well and making the floor for inside the cab section.

As well, I'll also be making the rear door as well.

It is my hopes to be able to try to get the engine into the game and running on the tracks as a simple locomotive by the end of the month. Then afterwards I'll be finishing the body and trucks and then start on the cab interior.

The EMC E1 was an early passenger-train diesel locomotive developing 1,800 hp, with an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, and manufactured by Electro-Motive Corporation of La Grange, Illinois. They were built during 1937 and 1938 for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway for a new generation of diesel-powered streamlined trains. 8 cab-equipped lead A units and three cabless booster B units were built. The initial three locomotives were AB pairs built to haul the Santa Fe's Super Chief diesel streamliners, while the others were built as single A units to haul shorter trains. The locomotives were diesel-electrics with two 900 hp Winton 201-A engines each, with each engine driving its own generator to power the traction motors. The E1 was the second model in a long line of passenger diesels of similar design known as EMD E-units. All Winton 201A-engined Santa Fe passenger units, including the E1's, were extensively rebuilt into the 80-class E8M engines in 1952-53. These were similar to production E8 models, but derated to 2000 hp so as not to burn out the early traction (axle) motors (which were reused)

Is it just me or did Lionel screw that one up? Is there like another version of it that Lionel modeled off of? !*don-know!*

Don't know, but I do know there were several versions actually, that's what my blueprint says. Because I'm modeling mine just like the blueprint.
