I've hit another decal snag, well more a google earth one. The decals i have always had a blurred section that ran for a good few miles. There has been an update on GE so i can get more up to date decals to use now but the blurred area is still there. Some creative licence might have to be used if i can't find pics of the area for now.
Instead of worrying too much about the decals for now i've planted a few thousand trees and dug some rivers. I've just put basic sceanery in for now to get a feel for what works then i'll go back and add the fine details. I've also had to re-grade a few miles of track as i'd made a very basic mistake with my gradients *!embar*!
Pics work best so here's a few.

Thanks for the comments fellas !!*ok*!!
I've come up with a simple but effective visual trick for the forest so that it appears dense but keeps the fps down. I found that matching a ground texture to the tree colour gives the impression of a thick wooded area but if you look closely at the pics it's actually pretty sparse. The only thick parts are the trackside edges to add to the illusion.

Can't wait to try the route.

I hope it will be community friendly and won't require a ton of payware assets in order to run.

I think I need to start saving for a proper gaming pc to see this route in all its beauty!

I'm building it to be as community friendly as I can. I'm trying to use only easy to find freeware, ie rcap, uktrainsim, Micheal Sinclair trees, Scalerail and roads. I have most of smm digitals signals and other assets as well so once they are changed to rcap I'll add them. I think the only payware I have used is a couple of bits from Donner Pass. Once I find freeware equivelent assets I'll swap them out. I'll check next time I'm on my computer and see exactly what I've used so far.
I want the route to be free from RSC update problems and be available to everyone. There is very little custom assets needed so once I've finished the basic route I'll try my hand at building them.

Ccarruth my computer is pretty low end on the scale of things so although a big spec will always help an average pc should run it just fine. I ran a 150 car test train without my pc dying and stuttering to a halt.

Oh, I'm gonna HAVE to drive this!!! With double spirals this must be the epitome of big mountain railroading. What are the gradients like?

If you're still looking for assets, my COA assets pack has a handful of unique items in it that aren't yet available in the libraries (I never got around to separately packaging them !*don-know!* ).

I have your COA route Tori so you might just see some assets you recognise at some point.
As for the gradient the climb out of Field to the summit at Stephen averages about 2.2%. I'm having to relay some of the east side from Lake Louise as at first I got the 1 + 2 tracks the wrong way round and now I've found my original source for the gradients was wrong. I'm unlucky because the DEM is so poor you can't see where the tracks should be.

I've not had much time to build lately but the town of Field is now half finished. Hopefully i'll have a lot more to update soon.

A lot of little details have still to be added and textures tweeked but the basic layout of the town is there.
