JOHNtheREDNECK wrote:I'm curious as to what the story behind this chopped rs3 that the PC and CR used. Was it involved in a freak accident and they wanted to salvage what they could, or was this some sort of intentional experiment?

Based on what I've researched, #9950 started out as New Haven #535. It then became Penn Central #5477 where it then became the first of the "DeWitt Geeps". DeWitt Geep is the name given to the Penn Central and Conrail RS-3 rebuilds at the DeWitt and Altoona shops. Penn Central started the rebuilding program in 1972 with #5477 (it became #9950 in December 1973). It lived on through Penn Central and Conrail ownership until it was retired in April 1985. This is the only unit I've found to have had it's short hood removed. My best guess is maybe it was meant to be solely used as a yard switcher.

That's pretty much all I've found out about this unit so far.

Here's an update for the EMD Re-Built chop nose.

First is a picture of the first render from almost 2 years ago

Now, here's the most recent version of it

Sorry for the lack of updates. I want to take my time so I don't get tired of the modeling and re-modeling I need to do.

Is it possible for you to make the horn and bell models child objects instead of being welded to the main model? I feel like that would be a nice detail for each repaint being made for the loco to have if we were able to swap horns out if a person wanted to put x horn on x repaint.

I'll definitely try to make this happen. When the main exterior of the locomotives is done and some more of the cab is worked on, I'll work on making different horns and bell locations. I agree that it would be a nice detail for different repaints.

This update is just to show where I am in re-doing the EMD Re-Built RS-3m (with a GP-9 long hood). I still have to add quite a bit, with the most difficult being the dynamic brake assembly. I'm also aware of the trucks having issues along with not being finished.

Work-in-progress pictures of the new AAR Type B trucks

These two pictures are a comparison of the old trucks and the new ones. Just keep in mind the new ones are still missing quite a bit.

This is the plan I'm modeling it from. I got it from here: http://ibls.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Diesel_Trucks

Sorry for the lack of updates. Here are some in-progress pictures of the new trucks.

- I've added the brakes to the outside of the frame. They still need more detail work and I need to also add them to the inside of the frame.
- I've started working on the mounting brackets on top of the frame for the brake cylinder linkages to actually operate the brakes.

There's also this monstrosity I came up with. Don't hold me to actually finishing this one, as it's just something I thought would be "fun" to make. As to what it is in my mind, it's a double (smaller) engine center cab version of the RS-3 (a predecessor to the single engine C-415). If you look closely, the truck on the right is the new version that I wanted to test fit and compare. This is a work of pure fiction; so if anybody actually wants this finished, it'll have to be it's own separate engine all on its own.

ALCo did actually have something like that in the form of the c415.

Image

Unlike the rs3, the c415 was considered a disaster and the sw1500 which came out around the same time really sealed its fate right from the start.

Anyway, keep up the good work on those bogies.

C415, The Monongahella connecting railroad company in Pittsburgh Pa had a 415 with a low cab and high adhesion trucks.

Sorry for the lack of updates !!**sorry**!!

Here's some pics of the cab as of today.
-I've added the throttle and reveser handles
-And I've started work on one of the back panels
There's obviously still a lot to do. For one thing, I still need to figure out what the general shape of the brake system components. But, progress is progress.

Again, I'm sorry for my apparent lack of interest in finishing this or any of my other projects that I've started. My modeling skills aren't the best. So because of that, it takes a lot for myself to get around to modeling the complex parts of these locomotives (especially cabs).
