I ran the route I mentioned before, buffer to buffer, and it comes out to 108 miles. If I had taken the Colton-Palmdale cutoff then that would have been a handful of miles less.

I imagine there's still quite a bit of work to be done.

Can't say for sure. Route won't be done for another year I would imagine but a beta could be end of summer, at least that's what I'm shooting for. All track/signals/markers/speed limits & signs set by end of August or early September, and then it will take another 10 months or so of finalizing the scenery.

You've got that right. I knew it was going to be a long slog when I started but it seems to recede into the distance with each session, much like in those horror movies where you see someone walking down a long hallway but the door at the end gets further and further away as they walk toward it. For the most part the screenshots I post are carefully framed to keep the bare areas out of view, of which there are a lot. And then there are still areas which are almost completely untouched, for example around Yermo. I'll post a couple of screens here now of the bareness and then we'll see how it looks a month from now.

That's cool Tom. I knew right where that was.

Been there, done that. !*roll-laugh*!

Dagget at the U.P. BNSF interchange. This is where the old LA&SL met the AT&SF.

My next pass through the area I'll have to place the signals facing SW and that reminds me I also have to get back to Colton and signal the diamond that's still there.

You can call me Tim... Tomcat is for the F-14.

Neither here nor there. I was just fiddling around Yermo and I'm always impressed when I place down the DD35s. They sound as good as they look too.

Two and a half miles east of Yermo - Minneola Road grade crossing. I'm feeling a kind of magnetic attraction from this point towards Afton Canyon. It's not close but is it too far? I'm not sure about it - can I do it justice? I don't actually think I can, which may make me stop right here. The formations are unique and the colors are many and subtle. I think it would need a 3D modellers hand to get it right. But there is this constant pull from the East. Thirty miles is a heck of a hike and Google Earth taunts me by making it look close.

The only problem I see with going towards Afton Canyon is finding a logical terminus out there in the desert that's not 30+ miles away. That's a lot of extra route distance. Yermo makes a good terminus because of its yard, either for generating local traffic or for run-thru trains.

Looks fabulous!!

Thanks.

Yeah, it's a big pile of wishful thinking on my part. Going that far just for some scenery is a bit over the top. After I posted the above I was thinking hard about it and coming to the conclusion that there is no good reason to go there unless I was crazy enough to take it to Las Vegas - and I ain't that crazy yet. I think I'll leave Minneola Road as the Eastern most point. Once the beta is out and then after I finish up the scenery I'll make a decision as to whether to start a new route completely or perhaps even start a phase two on this one, taking the Mojave sub up to Mojave and also making a circle and completing the Colton-Palmdale cutoff. The more I think about it right now the more I think I'll need to do something completely different before returning to add anything to the Cajon project.
