It is definitely a GP40-2. GP38-2 do not long dynamic brake blisters like the GP40-2 has.
They exist everywhere. You may not see them, but they're there. Awww yeeeaaaahhhh, 20% Cooler! /)

The unit in the photo is a GP40-2, Phase 2 ( or as close as I can get to one ). This particular one is for, wait for it... Norfolk Southern. No class lights and a bi-directional control stand. I built it particularly because they are used in yard service with the RPE slugs. The last time I saw one of these units on the road it was attached to a slug.

The plan right now is also to do an older version with the GP38 style radiator intakes, also in NS. The awful truth is that I absolutely hate unwrapping and painting. With the C39, it took me two months to texture what few road names I did release. This time i'm not going down that road again. There are several people here who are talented in this area, so i'm going to create good texture templates and defer to them.

Now for the asshat part. I'm planning to release a minimal-function freeware version with a non-descript rent-a-wreck livery, but if all goes according to plan, the fully functional unit package will be $5. I am pursuing an "official license" status with NS, and from what i've read that could cost some real money. $50 I can handle with donations, but anything beyond that I cannot absorb. This isn't set in stone yet, as I have not talked to an acutal face at the Company yet.

Speaking about the JC GP38-2, i've always thought it was excellent model. Alone, it was fine, but I did get a performance hit with multiple units. As far as the GP40-2, because of a higher amount of detail, even though it's a smaller unit, the poly count will be about the same as the C39. If your machine didn' t have a problem with that loco, it shouldn't have a problem with this one.

Hey man, when your done with the model, is a CSX skin possible? They're also coupled to slugs (at least in my area) and have no class lights but just a normal control stand. Your C39-8 is awesome, and I'm looking forward to see how much better this one will look.

G009(when its under 15 cars) has a GP40-2 and one of the GP30 RDMTs. CSX usually uses slugs with smaller yard and switching power.

Actually, the local CSX GP40-2 and it's RollMate are providing most of the reference photos, and hopefully later on the sounds, for this project. I'm not making a CSX livery though. In the interest of having this out before Xmas, i'm doing one livery and then will let the re-painters do their thing with it.

A peek at the Low-Res exterior model cab interior. All that you see here will also be used in the interior model, but will be spruced up, rounded off, and controls installed for the cab interior.

Looking great.

After I learn a couple more things about 3D Crafter I'll try to do a locomotive as well, I'm thinking of a GP40 highnose version.

How does a bi-directional control stand look? Do you have a portotype cab photo with it?

Is the engineer seated on a swivel chair with his back to the window as your cab model seems to indicate? So he/she can look both along the short and long hood?

Ummm, RSC would not appreciate my "honesty" concerning the current state of the Company. And with my real-world work schedule, there is no way I could keep deadlines or commitments to get product out.

I do have a photo from NS on Farcebook of two crewman in an NS unit (looks to be a GP38 or 40) in what looks to be a bi-directional setup. The control stand is canted at less of an angle than it normaly is, with the control front almost parallel to the cab wall, and the Engineer is sitting facing the stand, which would make visibility in both directions possible. The locomotive was sitting in a yard.

Thanks, Jerry.

Doesn't seem like a very comfortable and ergonomically correct way to drive a switcher. I suppose the chair swivels so the engineer can turn around to hang out of the window, etc. Probably still need a two man crew in the cab, for the engineer still can only look along one side of the engine.

Are railroads missing the single cab design of the old SW line with all around vision? Proper new yard switchers haven't been offered to and ordered by the railroads for quite some time, have they?

Jerry,
You certainly don't need RSC to be successful. I believe the community will support you enough for whatever license you need to get. We all appreciate all of the great free stuff you have donated to the obsession.
