the locomotive hasnt been updated for RW3, so the trucks are giving off the shine due to the new lighting effects which are somewhat non compadible with them. some of the RS freightcars do the same thing.

Thanks, I had thought they had updated a lot of the older models and fixed them? Its funny because I never had any problem with the Wide Nose SD40-2 textures even though I think its a similar vintage model.

Well, if that's the case with this particular model, I guess this project will be put on hold until I can find another model with the lower headlights and doesn't have glowing trucks......it looks awful. Oh well. *!rolleyes!*

I think you can swap the shiny trucks for dull trucks from one of the default SD40-2's, for instance the Black.
You need to edit the engine.bin file for that, which you probably want to do anyway to add those snow shields and cab front mounted bell adn other CN accessoiries.

I was always under the impression you couldn't change out the trucks with the default as it was part of the model. I tried changing the engine bin with the default SD40-2 bogey settings and it didn't work.

I was checking some rail photos online last night to see if there was anything in CN that could use the default SD40 and the old GT and IC units would work but I have to do more research to see what would work with the dynamic brakes. I know the CN SD40 DLC has no dynamic break but I'm not sure if it has the shinny trucks, will have to check. If not, it could be an easy switch as I believe they use the same texture files.

WIP CN SD40-2 NA Scheme

Unread postby roinuj » Sat Jun 16, 2012 6:36 pm

I've decide to to dust this project off and keep at it. I'm sticking with the older SD40 version in the Santa Fe DLC because of the light location. Even though its got the funky texture on the trucks, I decided to stay with this model because it has the animated fans, etc. Hopefully one day RSC or someone (or me when I get better at 3D Crafter) will create a Canadian version of the SD40-2 with the proper light locations.

I added the snow shields behind the cab.

Unlike my previous repaints, these will remain auto numbering with 3 versions of weathering. W1 = light weather, W2 = medium and W3 = heavy. This way you can have flexibility with different weathered units while still having the flexibility of the auto-numbering. I'm pretty well done the base repaint and weathering levels w1 and w2.

W1 = Light Weathering

W2 = Medium Weathering

I still have to complete W3 weathering and tweak the auto numbering lists. I'm going to wait until after SP1 is released to make sure nothing breaks before completing and releasing to the community.

Thanks for pointing that out. I think its just the angle and lighting of the screenshot. I never noticed it before but will see if the weathering obscured the detail and fix.

Follow Up

When I look at the previous screen shots, it apears the db has no details. Such lovely textures eh? !*don-know!* I'll add more detailing to my things to do list.

hmmm, on the topic of CN SD40-2's do you think you may be able to squeeze in the grey units? (EX KCS grey SD40's with CN noodle on long hood and GTW subletters on cab)

I took a patch from the TS2012 SD 40-2 db details and dropped it in. Looks much better. I have to massage the weathering (I think I'm too heavy on the W2) to make sure details aren't obscured. I'll post WIP screen shots soon.

I want to do an early Zebra version first but I'll add this one to the to do list. I may have to go static with the numbers because of the size of them. Don't think they will work in auto number but I will try.

Quick peek at one of my SD40-2 CN in Zebra. This would be a W3 (Heavy weathering).

Wonderfull, very impressive and different weathering... !*brav*! not the usual rusty, but instead a kind of dust or mud stucked to the fuselage, typical when long crossing long desert or bare ground areas. (sorry if I didn't get to translate properly to English, I guess I didn't).

Quick Update and Opinion:

I held off releasing these until TS2013 to see if any problems arise. So far the only problem has been RSC has discontinued the Santa Fe SD40-2 I used to make the reskins.

Unfortunately the stock TS2013 SD40-2 with the low head light does not have fan animations or operating wipers.

Just wanted to get an idea if anyone thinks there is any point in releasing these considering the DLC is no longer available or should I port them over to the default assets despite the missing animations?

!*don-know!*

i thought the current default sd40-2 is the updated one with improved everything and stuff? i got the atsf sd40-2, remember that they probably will re release it in the future when its updated like they have been doing to the rest of their locomotives.

The default BNSF sd40-2 with the low headlight is not updated on my setup. Its missing the rain effects, wiper animations and fan animations.

I don't know why RSC had pulled the DLC. Makes no sense when they don't seem to be updating anything. They initially pulled the SD40-2W when TS2013 came out for what was speculated to be TS2013 upgrades yet when they finally re-released it a few weeks ago, nothing changed from what I can see. I'm actually waiting for the promised RW3 updates they promised last year...... *!rolleyes!*

I guess I probably release the packages for those with the DLC and hope RSC re-releases them.

i actualy was reffering to the UP sd40-2 that got an upgrade a few months back which is the new default one. CN did buy a bunch of UP sd40-2's a few years back so maby this one could work on some of cn's SD40's? now what numbers they are currently i would have to do a bit of research on first.
