Hi Buzz,

I have them - they are cool - it's just the horns and headlights don't work for Chessie. I also don't reacall seeing any additional paints for their models - I thought it might have been verboten with their licensing scheme - it was a cursory look.

Thanks.

They've had other models available before (CR/NS, BN, and UP), but those have been taken down to be reworked apparently. So whenever those re-release you'll have more options.

Good progress on the C&O unit!

Hi Folks,

Nice model - unfortunately I don't have any of their earlier models. It doesn't seem as if anything has changed on the SS site in more than a year. It's a shame if they were associated with Jointed Rails - that they didn't get the models painted by them. I'd dare say - he's probably one the BEST modeler/painter in the Train Sim community - he does some incredible realistic weathering.

Just to clarify, they still are associated with JR.

Hi Folks,

Ok - this was bothering me all day - I had noted the height discrepancy before it was mentioned here. I had the SD35 and SD40 lashed up and it was clear something was very wrong. I just loaded them up again to compare.

The height issue is too much for me to ignore. Upon closer inspection - it looks like the body of the locomotive is mounted too high above the trucks - the coupler pockets are misaligned to the coupler - the plow rides too high - the fuel tank rides too high.

While it might not make it perfect - - - is there a way - - - to lower the entire body closer to the ground without moving the trucks? If we can - it might make the height issue more tolerable. If this is possible - I could use a little help accomplishing the task.

Are the trucks on the SD35 and SD40 supposed to be identical? If so - can I swap the SD35 trucks and place them on the SD40 - as they appear to be a better model. I know the Tru Rail guys did it with their most recent release - the Conrail GE.

Is that the only major issue with the shape? I really don't want to go down the road of painting all the models - if the shape is so bad. It seems the likelihood of getting a new SD40 seems pretty low. I've got way too many open Blender models as it is - I came over here to TSC for a break in modeling - thinking I'd do a few simple paints - LOL.

If I can't improve the height issue - I'm afraid it's...

Off to the scrapyard and the cutters torch:

The ol' SD40-2 dates back to the very origin of TSC (when it was known as Railworks) in 2009. So while it's very long in the tooth and far from perfect, it has served the community pretty well for nearly a decade and a half.

Hi Folks,

Understood - it was a moment of frustration after investing 20 or so hours attempting to make a model look better - for the community - to realize it has some glaring deficiencies. LOL - I'm not a diesel guy.

And to answer your question no you can't change the model and stay within the rules and this would definitely be changing the model. What Gary said. Sorry if this is not to your standard.

Well I suppose you could do it and not share the files with anyone.

It's probably possible by editing the loco's blueprint but I haven't done this kind of things for many years so I can't help much.

Probably I'd start by opening sd40_2_black.bin in TS-Tools, and look for the <Bogey> section. Then I'd have a closed look at the height of the pivot point for each bogey, which is probably something like <BogeyPivotY>, and if it was, say, something around 0.5 m, I'd try to lower it a bit and see if that sits the body more snugly on the bogeys without looking bad.

But then I don't really know if it makes any sense and the engines may asplode or launch into orbit at first try.
