You still need that Trains PDF? I tried to PM but don't think I can yet as I'm a "Newb". Just bought Rail Works 2 on Wednesday and getting ready to run some trains and maybe work on building a route based and starting on the ROW's here in New Orleans.

For security reasons you don't have access to the PM system until after you've made 2 posts. !*salute*!

Thanks, guys! I will be studying this info for a while. Looks like it will be getting track numbers because that will help tremendously in the building process. I've found that keeping up with a certain track through 8 miles of yard is a challenge. The grouping of the numbers will help, too. After a few hours, even the yard areas start looking all alike, lol. It looks like there is a "design" to the numbering but I haven't gotten the pattern completely figured out yet. Looks like thoroughfares/connectors get low numbers, mostly in the 100's.

I started this because it's flat and straight, but this Bailey yard is going to be a lot of fun. It's sort of like the string-art/algebraic experiments we did once in school !**duh*!!

Thanks again everyone. I'll have more questions, I promise.

p.s. I wonder if someone would be interested in modeling the yard facilities/equipment? !*don-know!*

for the late '50s and '60s I have a UP cow and calf for pushing the hump near done... There's still an issue with the floating headlight, but I think I have a workaround.

Tori,

Track charts have been ordered, will start scanning when I receive them.

Thanks, Trevor. Do UP track charts include speed limits? They should clear up some fuzziness around the x-overs and industrial sidings along the route, as well as give me the correct signal locations. The Bailey map I have borrowed from Nola cleared up a lot of questions I had about that and has added a level of seriousness to getting that yard as precise as possible. If my guess is right, you guys are going to want to run scenarios that will never leave that 8 miles of yard???

I have track laid mainline from a wye intersection a few miles west of the yard to some industrial sidings just east of Kearney. Yes, it is feasible to finish all of that if I apply very little scenery. The scenery assets used will be up to the community to supplement because all I have is the default stuff and some freeware. Hopefully some of the modelers will let me include some of the cool U.S. factory buildings and facilities they've made for their routes when I get to that point of construction.

I'm using default SanBar track and rules and plan to use the Def signals. Does this sound workable?

Tori,

I believe the speeds are listed but its hard for me to tell from the small screenshot I have of the charts.

Your plan sounds good. Any way to put in low or high target switch stands instead of those UK "levers"? Or will you leave that to others to mod after you are done?

Time for an update. As mentioned on my COA thread, I've been sick. But, I have managed to make some progress on the Bailey yard as a result of the information you guys shared. The track is all laid and connected; just lots of markers to place yet. There are also some x-overs to put in yet. Then I'll tackle signaling this beast. Will probably give a couple of you guys a pre-beta version to sample/check out after some more work. My first priority though is the next version of the COA.

Can this be even bigger? No!

I'm afraid this will result in bad framerates if these millions of tracks are filled with cars. *!greengrin!*

Coming along nicely! To bad we can't really use hump yards in Railworks (yet?). Could spend hours classifying cars into the bowl tracks. !*YAAA*!

The humps are NOT set to their real-life heights. I did a little experimenting with a free-rolling loco and made a "judgement call". IF someone could someday somehow devise a freight car that would roll freely independent of any attachment to any player or AI consist.... AND if someone could somehow devise retarding action for a new type of track.... then I think have set the grade approximately right for RW to maybe someday make these humps functional. This is important because anyone will find that changing the grade of those 108 tracks is a major PITA! *!lol!*

Hm, thinking cap came on as soon as I read "hump". I am quite sure it is actually doable, but it might need some relatively complicated stock scripting - and then going and attaching that script and the necessary blueprint edits to every single item of stock too.

What you can do already:

* Make a retarder "signal", all it does is say "hey, there's a retarder here" to the stock
* Have the stock listen for it.
* Make the brakes come on when it passes a retarder - well, if you can get the brakes to stay off in the first place you can do this too.

What I'm not sure how to do yet

* Keep the brakes off when the stock isn't attached to a train, and
* Making sure the brakes still work when it IS attached to a train! I can actually see a short solution to this, but it involves rescripting every item of stock including locomotives.
* Stopping stock rolling away when you place it. Quite hard to tell it when you want it to be loose and rolling, or loose and braked.

Somewhat similar problem to the one we've been looking at for making unbraked UK freight trains that still have working handbrakes, unfortunately that got shoved on the back burner so there never was a real solution found.
