You have to download a whole area of terrain for the DEM to work, so download all the files around the area you are working in and you may get DEM.

after testing it on some areas i know around my home town it seams it depends on the area you use the maps based on what kind of result you'll get, like around my area i got the maps to perfectly model the mountains around here but im still having trouble getting it working correctly for the clovis area

They really need to fix the game's stability since i can't go more than 5-10 minutes of editing track without having railworks crash and i have to start work all over again **!!bang!!** I have to spam F2 anytime i do anything since i have no clue what little thing is going to cause it to crash.

Really? i thought it was railworks itself since it only does this when im editing grades, other than that it runs perfectly fine

There is a thread on here somewhere about how you can help this problem by changing your settings.

Finally got the tracks through Abo Canyon laid! now I'll probably starting building the track at Clovis again or could follow the track from Abo Canyon down into Belen, still deciding on what to do.

Just so everyone's aware, the above SRTM data is 30m (USA only - everything else is 90m), while the IMG data at USGS is 10 or better. This is not a big deal in flat or distant terrain areas, but canyons and cliffs using 30m will look more like rolling hills than hi-res mountains when viewed close up.
Cheers!

Stationmaster101, I extracted the .HGT files from gridfloat at the USGS site which are 1arc/second. Below are links to it if you would like. I believe you should be able to go to your SRTM folder in railworks, and swap them for the lower resolution .hgt files it seems you're working with. Just make a copy of your existing ones, then move them to a different folder, then drop these ones in. Your track should stay in the same position, and the new terrain import around it.

Abo Canyon is: N34W106 - This File > https://www.dropbox.com/s/wq4jyfvynzrhc ... 6.hgt?dl=0

Folder with all the terrain files for your route: > https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vnn9bupchyc6 ... DTsna?dl=0

1 arc second (30m) is too low, and IMHO should be left for what I mentioned above or to fill holes as necessary. What he should be using, if he decides to do so, is 1/3 arc second (10m) or 1/9 arc second (3m) data. If the route is in the US, then 10m is available everywhere, with 3m available for a couple of states (West Virginia, Louisiana) and small county regions elsewhere.
Cheers!
