UP 844?

it's OK, I think I was just too quick ... next time I looked at the post, I saw the picture.

I think now I could model just about anything, provided I had all the engineering drawings. I'm just not comfortable doing things by eye. I like to get all the measurements exact.

It's looking good, and from what I've heard it's supposed to be going to be freeware.

Any screenshots? I'm at school and it's blocked *!rolleyes!* **!!bang!!**

I've seen the pics on flickr of some guy who was doing a cab forward, UP 9000 and UP 844, but didn't look too swell at the time. and that's been a long time. (clear back when the original Railworks came out)

That is one thing I am all for! Why put it in a SIMULATOR if it's not accurate?

The Challenger needs to be redone, BAD. I'd do it (learn how) but you never told me what program you use *!greengrin!* *!lol!*

Sharp looking little engine there, Mr Rennie! Hats off to you !!howdy!! !!howdy!!

Any chance of a steam engine building tutorial by you? Realistic spoked wheels, drive gear and its animation etc. etc.
Still sitting on that abandoned MSTS C&O H8 "Alleghany" 2-6-6-6 articulated.
Base model is available for finishing but will need some serious reworking to match the level of detail we've come to expect in Railworks.

Thank you :D

I've been asked several times if I'd do a tutorial. I have thought about it. The thing is, the way I do things is difficult to explain even with pictures. I might try doing some tutorial videos instead. I'm not sure I really want to be heard talking though *!lol!* (I hate the sound of my own voice).

The wheels were the very first thing I did, and they did set the tone for the rest of the model. I wanted them to be as smooth and realistic as possible, but I didn't get them the way I wanted them until much later, when I found a way to texture them that gave highlights and shadow on the spokes. To get a top quality model, you need to master both ... modelling and texturing (and you have to be a dab hand with Photoshop layering and effects) ... and then the animations and sounds are the icing on the cake.

I've made a start on the cabview. Can't take any pics right now, but I do have the boiler pressure gauge working beautifully.

Can't wait to see some pictures of how the cab is looking. Or possibly even a new video.

Hi Jonathan,

I've made a good start on the cab. I've animated the doors, put the storm windows in (also animated separately) and added a working boiler steam pressure gauge. I've also put in some super-detailed piping. Next thing will be to do the butterfly firebox doors with animation. I can't do any pictures today (my son is on the Steam computer) but tomorrow I'll try to find time.

Cheers,
Mike

I know what doubles my fps in Railworks :)

Unread postby mrennie » Tue Sep 18, 2012 6:15 pm

I found out what made the difference to my fps. When I installed the updated NVidia drivers, it left the SLI disabled. It was that!!

When I enabled SLI to use all four GPUs (it makes my other games run much, much better, because they have SLI support), my fps in Railworks dropped to where they were before ... a miserable 14-19 fps. So, I disabled SLI again, and the fps shot up into the 30 somethings. In fact, I was just testing the Consolidation on the HSC, and in cab view I'm getting 40+!! !*YAAA*!

That's great news, Mike! Great discovery! Just wondering...where were you able to select or enable/disable the sli? Im wondering if mine is enabled, because my fps is less than impressive.

I did it in the NVidia control panel. There's a tab where you can choose which GPUs to use for graphics and which for physics, or you can entirely disable SLI. I am really happy with the fps. The loco runs so smoothly, it's a delight to watch.
