Route Update:
The Bergen is being finalized for release tomorrow. I wish it was final-final, but this will wrap up the work that has been done over the last three weeks.
Recap:
-Track and Signal Replacement from Allendale to Ridgewood and Ridgewood to Fairlawn.
-WJ and WC interlocking have been completely replaced and signaled. They are smooth, they are accurate and they are awesome.
-Super Elevation: All Curves are super-elevated form Allendale to Ridgewood. On the Bergen County Line: SE starts just east of the BCL marker. It was too risky to try to SE those curves into WJ.
Remember, the route was initially built without SE, it has been retrofitted and its near impossible to line up two straight tracks that oppose each other.
-Waldwick Yard: Completely Removed and rebuilt to eliminate signal errors, but more importantly to set it LOWER then the main line track. (This was bugging me for years) Don't forget, we have a Wye to turn around all your pre 1974 E8s for the return trip to Hoboken. *Someday, I hope, someone will step up and build E8s and Stillwell coaches for the Bergen ( I have a dream )
-New Platforms were installed at Glen Rock - Borough Hall and Ho-Ho-Kus. Waldwick was replaced during construction.
-Speed Signs: all speed signs have been removed. Where necessary, speed warning and speed resume signs have been placed either where they exist or as a visual queue to the Engineer.
-Signal Speeds: Signals that protect interlocking and divergence have the divergence check box checked and the lower speed entered. (this is the only way to make the signal have divergence)
Signals were rigorously tested in both directions in free roam. Additional testing was done in QD with good result.
-Track Grade: Where practical, all track gradients are accurate to EL Track map of 1976 from Allendale to Glen Rock.
-Signal identifying marks - Work has started to conform signal makers to EL Standard. There are 2 pairs of numbers separated by a hyphen i.e. 23-24 in Waldwick. The first 2 numbers note in miles distance from Jersey City, the first number of the second set denotes miles in tenths and the last number is the track number. *note* as a big fat Easter egg to my EL brothers, I have noted the track on the right going east from Waldwick as track 4, track 2 was removed in the early 1980s when the line was 4 track from Ridge Wood to Suffern. Track 4 disappeared and became track 2. So where you used to see track two its now marked as track four. As you may know, on the Bergen, even numbers go eastbound and odd goes west.
-New Siding, Ridgewood, called: City Siding. Its an MOW siding and its restricted for all Diesel-Electric Locomotives
My attitude towards track speed is the same as the Railroad. Indicated track speed is the maximum you are permitted to go. If this means you have to drag a mile long train through a 25mph interlocking - your going 25 for a while. And one more point, slow down, this isn't Watkins Glenn!
The amount of research done with photographs, imagery and comments on web pages helped me to put this all together. But more importantly is the Prime Source material I use for track rules. When you are on the Bergen, you are, for the most part, running on the Erie Lackawanna rules. And that fact, this is what drives me to build, to reproduce and reverse engineer the New York Division has been a source of immense gratification and pride. (Thanks DAD for all those rides in the cab!). So get out there and enjoy the Bergen Guys - its for you!
Ok, here are this morning's screens shots from roughly 730am Summer time. The point of these pictures is to show you the rich detail I put into both stations. The details are subtle, its when they are all combined that makes the Bergen look like it does.
