The leaf springs are the main suspension. The trunnion the the loco sits on rests on top of the leaf springs. The leaf springs then sit on cross trusses that connect to the side frames. You can see the retainers for the trusses around the end of the spring.

Model parts, to give you an idea of the way they are made.

I agree 100% ... several times a day, or several times an hour in the case of 3DCrafter, and save to a file with a new name each time, and don't delete the old ones. I can tell you horror stories of how a model can get corrupted for no obvious reason and the only solution can be to go and find a part from an older file, copy it and paste it back into the newest file. 3DC also has a nasty habit of corrupting the texture UV mapping at its own whim.

Some more progress. Got the first couple of leaf springs in and next I'll get the other side in. The leaf spring housings and then the traction motors and the rest of the main supports before I start working on the braking mechanism.

I have to say that the leaf springs were a pain to build.

By the way, thanks for the reference, it helped a ton and it's going to continue to help a ton.

Idea's and possibilities for later.

The real version of the engine could do a top speed of about 85 to 90 mph, so once I get the engine into the sim I'm going to edit it so that it can do at least 90 mph.

The engine had the top of 1,800 horsepower, so I'm not sure how much more powerful than a F7 it will be.

I want to animate the side windows so they can open and if possible be able to turn the knobs by hand to open the window. It has one knob for the main window and a second knob to operate the vent window.

I don't know yet if I'm going to animate the doors, most likely these one's won't be animated, however I might try though. Though, my main concern when I start to work on the cab will be animating all the controls to work by the touch of the mouse and animate the gauges to work.

As of right now I haven't been able to find any gauge textures for later and I'm hopeless at being able to make them from scratch, since I haven't been able to figure out how to make one that looks real.

Make sure when you set the the maxspeed you set it ahead about 3-4mph. Otherwise with 90 as the value you would reach only 86-87

Actually, from what I've read the E1 could actually only reach 85 mph, so 86 or 87 would just be a little faster then what it could actually do.

Also the next thing I want to start doing is painting the body into ATSF Warbonnet. Just finished unwrapping it.

Here's what it will look like when finished.

Just shiny metal instead of the plain look.

For the leaf springs, you could have simply modeled a wedge, and fake the individual leaves later using textures.
Here's a few detailed pictures I found, of a Blomberg 4-axle truck model.
It's a high-res model, much too detailed for RW, but it gives you a general idea.

An F7 had 1500 HP, so the E was about 300 more. The Winton prime movers used in the E1 and the FT were rated at 900 HP.

Some more progress on the engine, been doing some more work on the trucks. Later I'll be starting on the traction motors, the mount that connects the truck to the body and then I plan on starting on the breaking system.

Also did the light fixture to where the light will go.

Some more progress for today.

Did the traction motors and connected them to the wheels, they took a couple of hours to model to correct but I think they look great.

Haven't got to making the piping for the traction motors yet, that will come later.

Also if anyone that might have access could get me sounds off of a real EMD E-Unit or EMD F-Unit for later that would be great. Since I haven't had any luck at finding any suitable sounds to fit on it yet. Also if anyone has access to real cab gauges that will also be great, since I haven't had any luck at finding any for later.

The main axis should be already correct since I set up the engine following what little Mrennie did on his steam locomotive tutorial. Truly though, got tired of waiting on more to the tutorial and so I started on this as a side project, which is now the main project.

Also, I might try to redo the springs as well, but could use a better picture of how they were supposed to look. They were tricky enough to build, since the usual tools weren't doing what I actually wanted them to do like they usually would do.

Truly though, this all is just the icing on the cake, the true difficulty will be the blueprints and animations.

!*cheers*!

That's probably what that track piece Mrennie had us build to show track height, when it's time I'll ask him what we do with the track height item.

The developer docs make it relatively easy. In particular, this one gets your engine quickly working:

Have ya'll forgotten about the "How to build a Locomotive" tutorial over at The Grade Crossing at Blogspot (PapaXpress's site)? If that don't get your motor runnin', your diesel fuel's got bleach in it.
