Its been a while since an update of any sort on the route, so here is the Siskiyou progress of late.

I completed some more scenery in the irrigated areas of the Shasta Valley east of Grenada near the end of January. I had been getting frustrated with the terrain texture set that I chose for the route for some time now, as it doesn't really do the dry and arid grasslands of Northern California and Southern Oregon justice. The area from Montague through the California/Oregon border is predominately very dry grass, and dried out soil for the summer and fall months, and I just could not find a combination of textures that simulated this to my liking. After a week or two of sulking about this, I decided to bite the bullet and make my own custom terrain textures.

In retrospect the process really wasn't that hard, and after a few weeks of mucking around I have some new textures made which should allow me to represent the environment of the region properly in my route. I finally got them working tonight in a separate test route (pictured). After making some backups of The Siskiyou Line tomorrow, I'm going to try to integrate the new textures in.

Will you be using the Feather River assets also? For rock faces, etc.?

That route does have some excellent assets and textures. However to keep the payware to a minimum I think I'm going to try and complete this with just Donner Pass and default assets for payware.

Good, I don't want to buy another pretty but boring route at full price just for a handful of assets.
DP will supply all the assets at first, which is OK.

Do you need any of that procedural vegetation with those new ground textures?

Good question. I took the first texture out of my 'sandbox' route, and added it to the working Siskiyou terrain bin file just now. No crash, no bugs that I've found, and all of the completed work is as I left it. (phew!)

Here is how it looks up close with no procedural grass, and then with the DP & Kuju static grass assets manually placed on it, and finally in the background. I will play around with procedural grass on it tomorrow and see how it looks. I might tweak the hue slightly to blend better with other terrain textures too.

Very nice..

The texture problem has to be a real battle with this route as it is/was with the Natron Cutoff. There are three distinct terrain types; the verdant farms and fields of the north, the cascade mountain section, and the rugged and barren Northern California Valley. It's a lot of different files for the four seasons.

Hi All,

A few speedbumps in the real world have had me away from TS for the past month and a half. Today was my second day back, picking up where I left off with the Siskiyou Line and Railworks.

I'd like to thank Derek Siddle for taking the time to help troubleshoot, and then fix some issues with my new terrain textures. His 'Art of Railworks' blog http://the-art-of-rws.blogspot.com is a fantastic resource and tutorial for content creation in this Sim, and has been a great help while building this route.

Below are some WIP shots of one of the more arid parts of the route, with several of the new textures in place. I am going to make a few extra variations of these with slight colour variations, to help blend and transition to other existing textures.
