Aspinwall Railway

A little bitty route I've been working on, and has made a few appearances in the "Any Route, Any Era" thread in the Screenshot Section. A little overview: The route is very loosely based off of an island off the north shore of Wisconsin in Lake Superior that I've spent many a night camping on. The main yard: "Stobbs Yard" is in the middle of the island and very near to the town of Whitetail Bay, 3 branches head out from there. There is a 2 stall engine house, 4 yard tracks, a coach track and a RIP track, just outside the yard is a spur over to WhiteTail Logistics who receive a reefer or two a week. To the north, a 4 mile line up to North Rock on the northern point of the island, which doesn't see much service, a weekly trip up to the airport to drop off a tank of of aviation fuel, and occasionally up to North Rock Lumber to get some wood. To the east lies the connection to the mainland via 3 mile line to Aspinwall and the small dock and yard. To the south/southwest is the town of Dessereau where the big business goes down, as the island's small coal fired power plant is on the south lip of the bay and is cause for the most traffic on the line. In town is a furniture company which ships larger pieces by rail. The route is all together impractical in real life, but for my purposes, it provides plenty of fun switching and hopefully something that is visually pleasing and feels authentic. Here are some screenies:

The CP Watertown Sub (AKA: SE Wisconsin) is still hangin' around, will get back to work on it when I get a new system (looking at April). I hope to wrap this route up and get it out there, so folks can see what they can expect scenery wise, and have yet another little switching route to monkey around on. I've got most of the trackage done on this little route, just setting up markers and stuff, then gonna try to get some scenarios going for it. Should be a good little test to see if I can make a functional/good looking route.

I'm so glad to hear we'll be getting something from you to run soon. I just love your shots of your various works in progress I see in the screenshot threads. This looks like a lovely and enjoyable route to operate. I find I enjoy the little routes as much or more than the long ones. Michael's IIR or MC&SA for example, or the nice little Russian Forest Land route. This one seems to have captured the place and time quite well and looks to be a lot of fun.

Well, the greater WhiteTail Bay area is complete with track and scenery, so I decided to run around the route for a while. Took two SW1200's from the shed over to Aspinwall, picked up 1 loaded reefer, two empty boxcars, 8 empty pulpwood flats, and 31 coal loads. Brought the train back to Whitetail Bay/Stobbs Yard. Yarded the pulpwood flats, dropped the reefer at WhiteTail Logistics and picked up the empty that was at the spur and dropped that on the outbound storage cars waiting in the yard. Then off to Dessereau with the coal train and empty boxcars. After yarding the coal train (split 15/16 cars on tracks 1 and 2), I shoved into town and down the Dessereau Furnishings spur. Dropped off two empties and picked up two loads. Back up to Whitetail Bay/Stobbs Yard with the two loads, which I then tacked onto the outbound train. Coupled up to the 8 pulpwood flats and head for the hills and North Rock. Picked up 8 loads there and dropped off the empties before running around my train and heading south again. Hooked up to the outbound with my 8 pulpwood flats and headed for Aspinwall. Switched the train out so it would be ready for loading onto the barge and headed back to Stobbs Yard, seperated the power, and shut down both units in the shed. Took just over 4 hours, operating as a real railroad (stopping and lining switches, obeying speed limits, etc...)

Coming south on the line to Dessereau with the coal train.

This gives me some hope that I'll finish this one, seeing as there's actually stuff to do, not just roll around aimlessly (though there's nothing wrong with that!) Next step after completing the scenery is to figure out how to make a scenario, which believe it or not I've never even tried before. I'd say a few more weeks of scenery work and a BETA might be in order.

Here are some map type things...
