I'd reiterate what Kali said- usually you'll get a reasonably accurate line drawing- usually from Model Railroader or RMC- and load it into your modeling program, using it as a backdrop. If you have sufficient photographs, details can be modeled by eye or using the photos as backdrops- I use blender, which allows you to load multiple backdrops at once. But from there out, there are no tricks, just good ol' 3d modeling, unless you have a 3d laser scanner of course! *!!wink!!*

I apologize for this render, as not much progress has been made, but I couldn't resist! I did some minor detailing/texturing work but most importantly corrected the front windshield shapes, which I'd say are a pretty big improvement.
