RW3/TS2012 SD40-2 GATX Repaints [UPDATED]

Unread postby roinuj » Tue Nov 08, 2011 7:25 pm

I would like to announce that I have uploaded my first contribution to the community, a package of 5 repaints of the default RW3/TS12 Black SD 40-2 in GATX schemes. Each repaint is individually created based on prototypical photo reference and are weathered to match those photos. Auto numbering has been disabled and specific locomotive numbers have been painted on each reskin.

[UPDATE] Files are available in the File Library under Search Tag: roinuj-SD40-2_GATX_Pack

If any comments or recommendations, please post here.

Fantastic! I'm slowly starting to warm to the SD40, I think.

@imnew

All told, I probably spent maybe 20 hours or so on them in total. The hardest and most time consuming part was becoming familiar with the base template and figuring out what was what and what to paint. Referring to other repaints was very helpful. Once I got my first one done (GATX 7353) the others went much faster. Once I got my Photoshop workflow set up, it went pretty quick. The most time consuming aspect of all was loading up Railworks and waiting 3-5 minutes each time so I can see the locomotive in game to check how it looks. Even in window mode, it seemed that I had to reload the entire sim to see the updated files. Wish there was an easier way to view the assets as we edit them.

I'm glad you liked them. I plan on doing others and you'll find I'll tend to stay as prototypical as possible, especially with weathering.

There's a tip for the waiting time most painters discover in the end:

* Open route editor
* Create new route
* lay one or two pieces of default track
* Save route

* Create a new scenario for every paintjob.

Won't spend forever churning through assets to load then.

Also, you do not need to restart railworks to clear out the main blueprint cache for repaints. After you save your new textures. Just Quit out of the game, this should get you to the debriefing screen, delete just the Blueprints.pkg for the model (wish I could give you an example), then press the "start again" button on the debriefing screen. This will regenerate your blueprint, and you will see your edits.

These are absolutely awesome, as demonstrated by a new screenshot in the "any route, any era" thread.
These repaints should be added to as much scenarios on as much routes as possible.
I understand that GATX leases those locos to railroads, but I didn't find a list of customers.
On which routes could they be realistically added?

GATX 7362 and 7369 are used by the Goderich-Exeter Railway in Ontario running on the CN Halton Sub.
