Log Building

Unread postby petebauer » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:58 am

My new log kitchen and mess hall has been posted in the file library (picture is there). I am working on a logging project involving a couple of rail branches and logging camps. A beta of this may appear in a few weeks. It will require the use of the Britkits Shay package to run. The grades are STEEP! And the curves are SHARP! I have a number of other assets available for your use. They can be found in the C&O Alleghany route from Tori.
Have fun.

Well, you don't have to, but if you want to run trains up to my logging camps you will need them. I haven't found another engine that can climb my grades.

Here is a hint as to coming attractions:

Bauer Lumber Company
Michael and Armand Bauer

February 18, 1916
Anthony, West Virginia

To : Victoria Morgan
Managing Director
Ronceverte, WV

Requests for operating expenditures.

The operations committee here in Anthony request the following expansions:

1. A Railroad “Y” on the island marked “Mill property?” on your map. The leg of the Y should have three tracks, one for an engine maintenance shed, one for storing flatcars, and one for spare box cars for hauling supplies.

2. An additional Shay. A camp of 30 men can produce up to 75 logs a day. We currently have two active camps and plan a third up the next hollow North of Anthony. The number of logs produced will be beyond the capacity of our one B Shay.

3. A siding off the main line for loading lumber onto cars for shipping out to the markets.

4. A hopper or gondola car for hauling horse manure. The large number of horses used here in the lumber yard are accumulating large piles of manure. In the summer months this is causing a lot of bad odors and many, many flies. The more “gentile” members of the community (store keeper, food store, the few wives of businessmen, and the itinerant Methodist Preacher) are beginning to complain. We will probably need to start hauling the manure out of town, perhaps to Ronceverte where they won’t even notice it.

Thank you for your consideration of these matters.

Respectfully yours,

Peter Bauer

Re: Requests for operating expenditures

The corporate officials met in the office here in Ronceverte to review your requests for additional services and materials. It does appear that production is rising quickly and continued growth is eminent. In light of this growth, your requests have been approved and orders were expedited to the concerned parties:

1. An order has been placed for contractors with the C&O construction crew working in your area to construct a Y yard track there at the mill in Anthony under your guidance and per your specifications.

2. An additional Shay engine has been ordered. From earlier conversations you stated that the B model worked best so that is what was ordered. Delivery is expected in about 30 days.

3. Reports are that the siding construction is already underway as I write this. A 497 ft. siding has been leased from the C&O to be connected on it's south end to the ~4,000 ft. passing siding next to the mill. We understand that the completion of the Greenbrier branch track to a point north of Anthony with freight locals scheduled daily should ensure dependable delivery of supplies and pickup of departing cargo.

4. The B.O.D. also approved your request for a "manure gondola" after some discussion as to where to ship this "vital commodity". After it was cleared up that no farmer was interested in purchasing horse manure, the discussion turned to your "suggestion" about shipping it to Ronceverte. This idea was resoundingly rejected and it was decided that we should deliver the car downstream to a large train yard such as Hinton where it might remain undetected and its source become untraceable. The details of how to later retrieve the emptied car are still under study. If pickup delays should occur, please accept our apologies as we do understand how that stuff piles up anywhere there are a bunch of men.

Please contact us with any further needs.

Respectfully yours,

Victoria Morgan
