When I built the scenarios I was not going after calculations. What I used was the experience that the actual Montour crews back in the late 1970's. 4 SW9's were used to pull 44, 70 ton loaded hoppers out of Westland and found that 3 tuned SW1500 could do the same thing. Once the P&LE had the complete control over the Montour the SW9's went away and were replaced with leased P&LE SW1500's. A experiment was done at one point where 2 GP38-2's (1 P&LE rr unit and 1 Monongahella rr unit) were tested to see if it was possible to pull loads out of Westland and it was a failure.

Here are some shots of the Westland-Champion scenario. Am going to delete them all now and reload and run with P&LE power.

Glenn,

In my limited freetime, I've been running your scenarios. Granted the P&LE units went in favor of Montour units, but the scenarios are not only the right amount of a challenge, but also fun, enjoyable and a great education into what this small coal hauler's day to day life was like. Just need a replica of the section gang equipment and I think we may be set (and maybe a proper Montour SW9 set with working autonumbering). I'm only surprised the "High and Dry'" (By this point Ex-P&WV now N&W) doesn't have any AI traffic running on it.

All in all, a job well done.

On a side note: I think on the GP38 tests the reason they failed was the lack of grip at Westland when biting into the grade (More axles available with four SW9's dragging than two GP38's), plus the two GP38's had different weights on account of different specs between the P&LE unit and the Monongahela Ry unit. I think if I read right the SW9's were gone by winter 1981? according to Gene's book.

Yep, the SW9's were gone. The Monongahela GP38-2 was the heaviest ever built for the loads on their line. It was better to use the SW9's for the extra effort, but once P&LE had their total control is when the SW9's went away and in came the SW1500's. I went with the SW1500's in the scenarios since they were better quality when it comes to sound and especially in multiple unit operation. I wished a full set of SW9's. with independent sounds then I would use them.
