Installing C & O Alleghany

Unread postby Cardinal51 » Tue Apr 10, 2012 7:12 am

This morning I started out with a clean TS20212 install and wanted to re install the C & O Alleghany. This was a fresh install, it had never seen C & O Alleghany before.

Problem with the other install (different install, in different Win7 install on a dual boot system) was that the tunnels sometimes looked awkward and lots of scenarios did not work and crashed.

So I decided to try installing it and keeping record of what I did so you guys might be able to tell me where I went wrong. Somethings definitely went wrong because I did not understand all instructions and the tunnels are still way too spacey some cases. *!sad!*

COA_beta4.5_Assets (~400MB)
COA_beta4.5_Route (~75MB)

Save the files to a temporary folder and unzip the COA_beta4.5_Assets file there.
Look in the unzipped C&O Alleghany folder for the file RW_AssetSetup.exe.
Run (execute) *as administrator* this file and follow the on-screen installation prompts
Problem:
- There is no RW_AssetSetup.exe, just a RW_RouteSetup.exe so I executed that one

Notes:
- Installing takes a long time, is almost like nothing is happening, just be patient
- When install is done, and after the sucessfull installation prompt Win7 popsup stating install might be faulty. I ignored that

Next, using the Railworks Package Manager, click on the “Install” button and look in your temporary folder for the file COA_Beta4.5_Route.rwp. Select this file and click Open. Click Ok to all the prompts that follow including any that report “these assets are already installed”.

COA_beta4.5_RollingStockPak (~350MB)
Save this file to a temporary folder and unzip it there. Look in the unzipped COA RollingStock folder for the file RW_AssetSetup.exe. Run (execute) this file and follow the on-screen installation prompts.
Notes:
- Installing takes a long time, is almost like nothing is happening, just be patient
- When install is done, and after the sucessfull installation prompt Win7 popsup stating install might be faulty. I ignored that

SMMDigital
2. Unzip file to a convenient directory on your computer.
3. Open Railworks and navigate to the Package Manager tab.
4. Select "Install" and navigate to the folder where you unzipped the SMM_XingV2 files.
5. Click on the SMM_LevelCrossingsV2.rwp file to install the asset into RailWorks.
6. Once in the World Editor, under SMMDigital in the Object Filter, make sure that "RailNetwork" and "Scenery" have been checked.
Problem:
- How to start up world editor ? Start any scenario and then hit Escape and pick World Editor ? But then what ?
Solution further down in this thread
7. Use the same procedure to install the SMM_TrafficSignals.rwp. These will install to different folders. The Traffic Signals will show up under the Modern Signals category. The street lights will show up under the Commercial Buildings category.

Your scalerails and roads are not installed properly. I beleive all you tell the install is where your Railworks folder is. This "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\ScaleRoad" is definitely wrong as they should be in Railworks\assets\3dtrains....

For the crossings, when your in the World Editor, pull out the middle left flyout. You will see a small blue box with a orange triangle in it. That is the Object Browser. Click it. A new pop up will appear on the RIGHT. It has a drop down list. Find SMM Digital and click in the radio boxes to get a green check.

Thanks for the help Bob

. . . . . This "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\ScaleRoad" is definitely wrong as they should be in Railworks\assets\3dtrains...

Ok will try that. Think it might be smart of 3dtrains to tell people how to install it because there must be many more having the same problem, or maybe not *!lol!* - - -> an hr later: It did the trick. First tunnel i checked is tip top ok ! Thanks !

Can I start any scenario/toute, hit escape, and choose "worrld editor" ? Or should I be in a specific scenario / route ?

Looks like (check screenshot below) all was already set correctly by the installer ?!? I did not change anything.

RailNetwork-and-Scenery.jpg

So that is looking good. Too bad I am lost on the Traffic Signals and the Street Lights. *!sad!*

Ok, thanks, so that is taken care off then.

Lets move to the next problem.

7. Use the same procedure to install the SMM_TrafficSignals.rwp. These will install to different folders. The Traffic Signals will show up under the Modern Signals category. The street lights will show up under the Commercial Buildings category.

I can not figure out what exactly I need to find and what I need to do with it. All help will be appreciated.

You already did it when you checked SMM Digital and Scenery. As long as you did that while editting the C&O route you should be good.

The required stuff seems to be working ok, THANKS for all your help everybody.

So now it is time for the optional stuff. Seems that the optional stuff is not optional at all because without it various scenarios simply do not start up.

I encountered several problems. Hopefully you guys and gals can help me out again.

1.Using the RailWorks Package Manager navigate your way to where you extracted the files from this zip, and install the " co_bauer_lumbpack_01.rwp " file using the Install process of the Railworks2 Package Manager.
Now follow the process described below for installing all shape files required for the BrittKits Payware Shay B Class Steam Loco Repaint: a: Find the .bat file in this folder noted below and then double left click on it ( shown in co_bauer_lumbpak_bat.jpg ): ProgramFiles\Steam\steamapps\common\Railworks\Assets\Britkits\Logging\RailVehicles\Steam\Class B Shay.............. Note: I read the readme and pdf. This is way to complicated so I will try installing the remainder first
This allows use of the NE CSX SW1200 repaint included in the freeware COA Rolling Stock Pack. This free repaint is available here.

Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Kanawha 2-8-4 Re-Paint (Freeware from Railworks America)
This locomotive was packaged using RW_Tools. Unzip Kanawha 2-8-4.zip to a temporary folder of your choice. Then, in your temporary folder you'll find a folder named Kanawha. In the Kanawha folder, find and execute the file named AssetSetup.exe to install it into Railworks. If you have more than one RailWorks installation on your PC, you will be given the opportunity to change the RailWorks path during the install process. There are NO further steps required to enable the unit; it should appear promptly in your asset browser list.
Note:

1. Install the co_equip_pack_01.rwp using the Install process of the Railworks2 Package Manager.
2. Select Object Set Filter ( Blue Cube with orange arrow tip ) and Tick the RailsimulatorUS box under Kuju.
3. Create a consist in your scenario and enjoy!!!
Problem:
- I skipped step 2 and 3. No idea what Kuju is and step 3 seems for scenario builders only

I am going to try again during the next couple of days. Must be possible to install this route in less than one month :-)

I think that if there would be a decent, normal and user friendly way to install home made routes there would be a whole new enormous market out there for all those builders and their fantastic creations. For people like my dad and young cousin the only option is to buy the commercial products. Installing home made routes is way to difficult and simply impossible, is almost like the builders do not care about people having to be RWspecialists and jump through hoops to get the stuff running. But like I already wrote, I will try it again because I really want to drive this route and scenarios, I hope I will finally succeed. *!embar*!

Whoa. Please don't bunch freeware route builders with the pay ware builders. First of you need to consider that we need multiple licenses.

• We are not allowed to package payware assests (need to weed them out)
• Authors may not allow us to repackage there own freeware creations (now we need links to all the downloads)

Also remember most freeware route builders are still learning themselves about how to "put it all together" for "someone else".

Think of it this way. You are shopping for a piece of furniture. One store has it preassembled for reasonable price, however the store across the street has something nicer for less but you have to assemble it yourself.

We have some down right awesome freeware routes. People have poored their hearts and time into them.

And then they give it away to the community, not in the expectation that there is some contest to win, or for a donation, but for a simple "thank you".

Please consider all of this before questioning a route builders ability to "do it right", because if there are enough voices doing this, then people will be less inclined to share.

My post was not against the route builders at all and I am very sorry when any community route builder feels offended. It is against the system/tools RSC provides to the community route builders to get their stuff installed. Is almost as if they do it on purpose so there is a bigger market for the payware builders.

We have some down right awesome freeware routes. People have poored their hearts and time into them.

I know, they do great work and are 100% dedicated and 200% creative, I appreciate every minute they have put into it. That is why I am trying so hard to install this stuff.

It is not the builders fault that it is virtually impossible install their creations. I think RSC should provide tools to install these routes and tools that enable route builders to create a simple package that installs a route in a few clicks. So the community builders can use their time for the content and do not need to worry about the install process.

Already when MSTS was THE trainsim around the installation of community routes was ^&%^&*** (totally crappy), seems RSC has not learned a bit in all those years. That is too bad, because I love training with railworks and love to try out many of these community created routes !

Why does RSC let this happen ? Lack of respect for the community ? Commercial reasons ? Another good reason ? I do not know. I only know the result of it all is very frustrating and disappointing *!sad!*

I really don't see how you can say this at all. I have never had a situation where I couldn't install a third part route. Yeah, I might have to find some assets. Big deal. Someone put a lot of time and effort into this route. Yes, some of them require that you have certain RSC payware installed for assets. Read the "read me" file (that's why it's named readme!) And like Papa said, a lot of times, someone that uses another third party asset and that other person doesn't want it distruibuted then you have to link to it as a seperate download. So is that such a big deal? Really? Or you just want it all bundled up for you? Sorry, with all the rules and stipulations that come along with Railworks, that's not always gonna happen. [end rant]

I do read the readme's but still having lots of problems with many routes. I am really trying hard to get the C&O route installed. But although I have been trying for many weeks I seem to be doing many things wrong over and over again without knowing it. Because I really want to locate where I am going wrong I tried to write down step by step in this thread what I was doing hoping to find out where I should do things different. Some problems have been solved, but many seem impossible for me to solve *!sad!*

Have you tried looking for help over at Tori's forum?

http://www.coarw.com/forum/

Not that you can't find it here, but maybe since that forum is dedicated to the C&OA, you might find the help you need quicker. *!!wink!!*

I am already a member of this forum and because it seems there is way more traffic overhere I thought to try this forum.

Maybe posting overthere is indeed a good idea. I just registered and when I have an account I will post my questions.

Cardinal51, my rant was not meant to target you specifically. Simply put, your post brought a couple months frustration to a head.

We have all had problems at one time or another with a route or asset not working. I agree that its a problem that needs a better solution. I also think that RSC will not go any farther than supporting the current package manager for us freelancers because there is no money in it for them (and rightly so). Mike Simpson is trying to make his RW Tools more intelligent, and that's a step in the right direction, but it still runs into the licensing problem, and that is a constraint we have to live with.

Sorry to take this so far off topic. I'll try and lend a hand with trying to figure out the problems you are seeing with the COA.
