Dynamic Braking

Unread postby SantaFeWarbonnet » Sat Oct 08, 2011 11:17 pm

Hello im fairly new to railworks, as you know dynamic braking in railworks is not so realistic. after adjusting the dynamics to a more realistic level (by changing the dynamic brake effort v speed folder located in the simulation file of your locomotives) I noticed that the dynamics only act one the first locomotive in the consist. for example I took a 50 car train down Cajon using 3 dash 9s, using about 80% of my dynamics. then I added 3 more dash 9s to the consist and the dynamic braking was the same at 80% when in reality it would be less because of more locomotives. Does anyone know how to fix this and add dynamics to multiple units?

I don't have a solution but would like to re-enforce the above problem with dynamic braking.

If only you could import the original M$ Train Sim dynamics to Railworks.

I am curious... what changes did you make to the dynamic brake effort vs speed file? I would like to make changes myself.

Disregard

I managed to edit the file successfully. Thank you for pointing out the file location. I came down Cajon in an ES44 with 25 cars with full dynamic and held the speed with only occasional application of service brake to regulate the speed. I don't know how accurate that is, but it feels much more realistic than default.

Perhaps when using multiple engines you could change the file again or maybe create several files each with pre-defined dynamic brake settings you can swap in and out as required? This isn't ideal, but it might work until RS fix the physics.

I think you might run into adhesion problems if you just up the brakeforce on the front engine. If there's a scripter with some spare time they might want to try passing the value of the dynamic brake control back down the train ( just like in RW2 times we passed RPM, you can even just modify the code for it ).

I also found the file. Can you identify the specific line and value(s) you changed as I'm very interested in this as well?

Thx

So you can see several strings with x and y values.

The x value represents speed and the y value indicates dynamic brake effect at that speed. So reduce the "y" effect for each speed.

You will probably do this in the SD40 file as other loco's default to it. I would suggest making a backup of the original beforehand.

I dropped mine to 0% , 5% , 9 % , 15%, 25%, 20%, 15%, 15%, 15%. I'm not suggesting this is completely accurate but it will be a work in progress. This would probably best replicate 25 cars and one engine or 50 cars and two engines. You can tweak it for different combinations.

I did not have any traction issues in the ES44 or the SD40 at full dynamic coming down Cajon in fine weather.

sorry for not responding, ive been hiking. yeah I found that a realistic value is to divide all the Y values by 4 or 5 depending on how good the dynamics are already (I think the way bitchinbetty has set them up is probably more realistic).keep in mind that going down cajon with a long train you would probably have to use the air brakes as well as the dynamics. as a reply to your previous comment, yes maybe if we created several files each with different values representing more locomtives, that would work but would be time consuming and annoying, still I might try it.

I noticed in the Horseshoe Curve scenario that dynamic braking was much more realistic than what it was in RW2.
However, clearly it was applied only on the first loco, because it backed up into the 2nd loco so much that two F7s looked like a single E7 unit, and there was a lot of wheel slippage.

exactly... you would notice that if you added more locomotives to this consist that its braking would not be better like in real life. hopefully RS could fix this on all locos at once.

third edition of railworks and MU STILL isn't working right?

this is ridiculous.

Well, I seem to have a SD40 that will tell any other instances of itself to turn DB on, if you'd like to try it in this post; I'm not sure how much longer it's going to work for though! my driving trailer that worked for the initial RW3 release doesn't work anymore, without me touching it. I'm pretty close to giving up on vehicle physics for now.
