File Library installations...

Unread postby zdierkes » Fri Sep 16, 2011 8:58 pm

Hello, Im new to the forum, as well as to the game (Railworks 2), Im already itchin to download add-ons and such. But Ive already ran into a problem on installing the objects I want to download. Simply put...how do you do it? Now Im an old Microsoft train simulator gamer of the past, and I downloaded many things...but I remember having to place certain files in certain folders in the root MTS folder...sometimes they would self-install, but other times it was literally a headache of time consuming, troubleshooting placement of files. But I havent been able to figure this new stuff out. What can I do to figure it out? !**conf**!

Most add on's that you download will be a Zip file. I use 7Zip to "unpack" the file and put it on the Desktop. Open Railworks, but don't hit that "Start" button yet. Choose Package Manager. Navagate to your Desktop, double click on the file folder. You should now see a .rwp file. Left click and install.

Now, click on Tools and Docs and clear the blueprint cache. Then start RW, and have fun! Oh, and, *&!welcome!&*

Ok, following your instructions, this is where Im at: I downloaded a zip file for a set of 5 CSX SD40-2 repaints. Unzipped it by just clicking the "Extract all" option upon right-clicking on the zip file. I have 6 items on my desktop now...a NE_SD40-2_CSX.rwp file, a FILE_ID.DIZ file, 3 pic files and a readme file. I opened RW2 and I am looking at the Package Manager. I followed your instructions and I now have the .rwp file in my PM list. (Does the FILE_ID.DIZ file need to be there too?) I left-clicked the .rwp file and clicked on the "install" button to the right of the PM window and I am directed to choose a location (I assume). Its asking me for a file name and has directed me to my desktop. Ok, if you follow me so far...here is where Im stuck. As i dont recall this part was in your instructions...or I misread your instructions somewhere..very possible with me! *!lol!*

BTW, thank you for the welcoming! I am sure I will be here alot, and Ill get this add-on thing figured out and be able to help the next "new guy" *!!wink!!*

You need to do the install button and then go find the rwp file you are trying to install from that prompt. locate it and it will ask you want to open it. click open and the install will run. After it is done I always close RW re-open clear cache and then start the game. I don't recall what you have to do anything after that with those particular repaints. Make sure and read the read me in case you have to add some Geo files to get them active. If you need more help on this holler.

the file_id.diz, the 3 pic files and the read me are mot needed for the rwp file to be installed, but as Buzz said, read the read me carefully.

**!!bang!!** Obviously Im doing something wrong here. The readme says nothing about installing them...just basically describes what they are... I just uninstalled the file to start from scratch. I think I got it now...After I uninstalled it, I went back, reopened Package Manager (of course the file Im trying to install isnt there). I clicked install. Little blue progress bar went accross the screen. Now the file is in my list on the left side of the Package Manager window...along with a FoliagePack, RailWorks, and TestTrak file. (whatever those are, they were already there the first time I opened Package Manager) OK, according to the Manager, the file is installed. What I beleive I was doing before was trying to click install again after I clicked and highlighted the file I just put in the list on the left, thats where I would get the same exact prompt I was telling you about(same prompt I got when I was putting the file into the Package Manager in the first place) when I got the screen that wasnt within the original instructions I got here. So I cleared the cache, closed out and restarted...started the game...and all I see is the default SD40-2's !*hp*! !*don-know!*
Now, are the items on the left of the Package Manager under the heading "Select Package" things that are "in the game", ready to use? Or are they items that need to be "put" somewhere yet? Cause if they are good to go, they should be an option in the game...and they're not.

I'm afraid I'm not good with repaints. Never seem to be able to get them to work. Third party locomotives, rolling stock, routes, scenarios, I have no problems. It's just the darn repaints. Maybe send a PM to Mad Mike. He seems to be the guru of repaints.

I sent him a PM. Hopefully he can figure it out for me, thanks for your help though...Im sure its something Im doing or not doing. I dont want you to think I feel you didnt help me none. The hard part is this: I learn best by pictures or hands on type training. Instructions in simple text form is hard for me to comprehend and understand. In your case or anyone elses, Id have to be sitting next to you watching you do exactly what you instructed me to do in order to understand it fully. That or look at a set of individual step by step screen shots of what your telling me to do. So Im positive Im not seeing somethin here!! !DUH! In the past Ive been in this same predicament with things and upon waiting for an answer to a question, Ill be messin around with it and BOOM, I figure it out just by my own nosein around and trying different things. Suddenly the next post after a post reading" AAAHHH, I cant figure it out!!!!!!! AAAHHH!!!" from me will say, "I got it, it works, nevermind!" Pretty crazy, but Ive done it lots of times.
We'll see what happens here...

Problem solved, thanks you guys for all your help. Now I have run into a new problem...As I can now place the new repaints into the scenairio editor, I find I cannot simply delete the old UP '40-2's and insert my CSX ones. I suppose I have to issue some type of information for the replacements (Which I have no idea how) as now that Ive placed the new locos (I simply deleted the old, put in the new and saved and closed out of the editor), I go to start the game, go to my newly edited scenairio, and once in the game, my locos are dead on the track. I cant left click them to select them or nothing.
So my new question is, how do I bring my new imputs to life so to say? !!det!!

Hit escape, world editor,Then go to the upper left flyout. You will see a little thingy that looks like the end of a passenger car. Click on it and you will see a warning in the middle of the screen. Say yes. You may need to click on some place other than the end of the car symbol then you can use the up arrow to get in front of that symbol.

Find the little head with the cap on it in the upper left flyout again, click on it, move your mouse pointer to the loco that you want to make the main driver and click on it. A symbol, a white circle with a blue head in it should appear. Hit the arrow on the right lower corner. It will ask if you want to save the changes. Say yes.

Your locos should now be live when you click on them
!*cheers*!

OK, I did all that, got the little drivers icon over the cab of my lead loco, after hitting the "play" button at bottom right, I get this error message. I take it Ive left something out as far as the instructions of my lead loco, as it is saying in the screenshot that the loco lash-up is blocked by another oncoming train. Where do I go from here?

I just assumed that you were in a free roam scenario. I think you are going to have to reload the thing if this is not a free roam look and see what the locos are called so you can rename the ones you install what they are named before you change them. I hope that makes sense. I suggest you get RW_Tools if you are going to get half way serious. This program will allow to substitute assets without any hassle.
