TS Utilities Will Not Refresh

Unread postby Minneapolitan » Tue Mar 30, 2021 7:31 am

TS Utilities was working fine for me a couple months ago. When I hit 'refresh,' it refreshed in just a second.

Now for some reason when I hit 'refresh,' the image below pops up. If I click continue, the green refresh bar holds at about 40% and just...does nothing. If I click 'Details,' it's just a bunch of technical jargon that makes no sense. I let Utilities continue refreshing for an hour and nothing changed when I returned. I've read others here grumble that TS Utilities can be slow...but this can't be normal. I've tried restarting my computer, I've made sure my primary TS isn't running, etc.

Any tips? What's going on?

Have you installed any new packs, routes etc. since a couple of months ago? Perhaps that might affect the program.. the new install file may have a name longer than 260 characters (crazy I know)

It might be worth looking in the \STEAM\steamapps\common\RailWorks\PackageInfo folder (sort by date order) to see if there is a "corrupt" entry as suggested by HighByPass.
You could also make Windows accept files with >260 characters using a registry hack as here: https://lifehacker.com/windows-10-allow ... 1785201032 or https://www.howtogeek.com/266621/how-to ... haracters/ Once that is done the error should disappear.

Or just avoid the problem entirely by not using TS Utilities. I haven't used it for about 5 years.
Rwp packages are just zip files. Open them with 7zip and drag the asset folder to your Railworks folder. Accept the merge operation when asked.

But what happens if you no longer want an item - very easy to uninstall cleanly with Utilities - not so easy to do using your method!
This error was not the fault of Utilities (or Train Simulator or DTG) but due to Windows not being able to process long file names.

Yes, it's easier because it automates the operation.
Manually it's not that difficult: open the .rwp again, see what's inside, delete that from your TS installation.

But the reason I stopped using the package manager was because of the long refresh times. If that problem can be fixed then it's good.
Also, I never uninstalled anything from TS!

While I appreciate the responses, this is the response I was fearing.

Think of it this way: You guys are transmission mechanics who are used to talking with other transmission mechanics. But most people are not mechanics - no matter how good we are at driving a car.

I'm not tech savvy. I've installed the 7zip program and read the How To Geek article about using 7zip. But none of it matches with what I'm encountering with RWA material and procedures.

I realize that seemingly countless people have technical issues with material here on RWA, and that helping non-techy people must be truly tedious. But may I please have a step-by-step guide for how to make this work? I would love to know exactly what you guys are clicking when downloading content. Please don't assume I know every concept, program, or bit of computer lingo...just like I wouldn't assume you know how to rebuild an automatic transmission! What is painfully simple to some is not simple to others. As I said on a different thread, I'm only 36 years old and this is still frustratingly complex.

On that note, such a comprehensive step-by-step guide is severely lacking on RWA and should be in the Learning Center section so dummies like me can actually enjoy all this great stuff!
