VRRUNTIME140.dll crash on startup leading to out of memory crash

Unread postby CSXK921 » Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:41 pm

So it seems I am one of a few that have come across this issue recently. Currently, my main issue is a crash at startup, specifically due to a "OUT OF MEMORY" error. This bout of crashing originally started a few weeks ago but as an intermittent crash while loading scenarios from the scenario editor and then progressed to a crash on startup not allowing me to get past "updating scenario database". Upon research finding out that the VRRUNTIME140.dll was most likely due to Microsoft Visuals C++ 2015 not being installed so I decided to install it.

After installing the Visuals C++ 2015 I was met with a different error at the same point on startup but this was an out of memory error which I have no clue why. I uninstalled C++ completely and started railworks and was back to square one with a crash on startup due to VCRUNTIME140.dll not being found. **!!bang!!**

I have just now reinstalled C++ and am right back to getting the out of memory. It now seems to me I am getting nowhere. any ideas on what in the world is going on here? !*hp*!

I have done some quick research and have tried a few things to resolve this issue myself. these solutions are as follows:

verifying game cache (I don't know why as this seems somewhat of a Microsoft issue)
completely (and painstakingly due to LOADS of 3rd party DLC I had to isolate) reinstall the game from scratch
manually repairing Microsoft visuals C++ 2015 X64 and X86
manually installing Microsoft visuals C++ 2015 X64 and X86

any ideas are appreciated as DTG seem to be overloaded with support tickets as I have not gotten a response back. *!!thnx!!*

P.S. if this is in the wrong place let me know and I will move this to the appropriate place.

- Have you tried starting the game after reinstalling it but before reinstalling the DLC?
- Have you unsubscribed to all Workshop items before reinstalling the game?

In addition it might be a good idea to reinstall all compnents which are in the railworks install folder. I had a windows update some weeks ago and railworks did not work properly with frame rates of 7-8. Reinstalling helped!

My thoughts are that uninstalling your workshop items starting with the most recent a few at a time, or all at once may be a good start.Then retest.This would be much better than doing a complete reinstall. Do you have an older backup of your Railworks folder? You can start from the Railworks.exe and see what happens. I always keep backups of this folder for testing and if I screw up an installation of a reskin or sound file. External SSDs are cheap and easy to connect. This has saved me lots of grief.
