GP38 Reskinning Issue

Unread postby steve_the_slim » Sat May 21, 2011 4:35 pm

Sorry in advance for the huge images.
I'm getting a weird bug in my GP38 reskin. In photoshop it looks like this:

But in-game it looks like this:

It's supposed to look like this:

I made this using the RW_Tools tutorial from here: http://www.rstools.info/tutorials/Tutorial_Reskin.pdf This is my first reskin, so I'm probably missing something, but what?

The obvious question is are you sure you're replacing the right texture? ( including - are you using the right base model for the paintkit ).

Don't forget to turn the alpha channel down or it will look like it's covered in varnish.

I put together a layered paint template for the GP-38-2 and it's in the rolling stock file library. The textures are coming from the correct sources, but they're compiled way wrong.

I would suggest downloading one of Britkit's repaint kits, as they have an alternate method laid out to get the textures into the game.

Just out of curiosity, I used RSBinTool to look at the .dds file rather than the .TgPcDx file. It appears that something is messing up the file when I save it in Photoshop. I made sure to save it using the parameters that RW_Tools told me to, so I'm not sure what else is going wrong.

Edited to clarify: The texture file is not getting screwed up when I recompile it into a TgPcDx. The dds file itself is somehow being corrupted when I save it.

Load the dds file back into Photoshop with the mipmaps, save it as a jpeg ( make it a bit smaller ) and paste it here? that would save a bundleof awkward questions.

If you have RSBintool don't mess around with RWtools, just load the original texture into that & use it for import/export.

Here's what the dds looks like loaded back into Photoshop:

I tried saving the texture as a bitmap just to see how it came out, and it looked fine, so it looks like only dds files are getting messed up. I'm using the Nvidia dds plugin, could that be the problem?

EDIT: Well now, this is interesting. I used DXTBmp to convert my bitmap copy into a dds and it seems to have worked correctly. Time to see if it'll work in-game...

EDIT 2: Finally! It works! !*YAAA*! !*YAAA*! !*YAAA*!
Now to start fixing all the other issues...

I have had the same problems, but it comes and goes. W7 SP2 64-bit. DXTbitmap, RW_Tools, Gimp.dds , paintNet.dds and RSBintools. One will work one day and not the next. Sometimes its saving/converting to.dds and other times importing .dds to .TgPcDx. Just keep trying and it will finally work.

I go photoshop->dds->RSBintool, and I've never had any problems, and it also forces you to use the right number of mips. Using RWTools drove me mad for the few hours I tried it.

Is there another site I can get RSBinTool from other than UKTrainSim?

Google tells me Railsim France has it ( here ), I'm assuming they have permission to redistribute it.

For non-french speakers "Télécharger maintenant" means "download now".

Just a thought Steve; did you happen to flip your image 180 to add the graphics and forget to flip it back? It appears as if the texture is turned the wrong way.

I'm not really sure what went wrong. The good news is I managed to get it to work correctly. It still needs a lot of work, but the textures are all where they're supposed to be now.
