GHOST CARS!! Downloaded Repaints Show On List...

Hey there ~

I recently discovered how to download user-created repaints into my TS2021 and have taken full advantage of a poor rolling stock inventory that comes with basic Train Simulator on Steam. (Novices like me never knew there was a "Utilities" program within Train Simulator - why was that ever hidden??)

Certain pieces of downloaded rolling stock appear on the left-hand flyout list but do not appear on my screen.

These ghost cars are as follows:

- Bangor & Aroostook 40' Plugdoor Boxcar Pack (RickKfoury)
- Maine Central 40' Boxcar Pack (RickKfoury)
- ERIE AAR40ft10-6BoxLD/MT EL (buzz456)
- PLE AAR40ft10-6 Boxcar Pack (buzz456)
- Boxcar 50ft Noname P/S/Y-door (I forget who made this one)

There's also the curious case of some Black Hills, Swift, and Kansas steel reefers which don't show...but if I select them and move the cursor into the middle of a string of cars, a gap appears as if it's ready to place the car in between the others.

To be clear, it's not lost on me that some repaints are based on other "base" or "primary" pieces of rolling stock. I learned this quickly when I downloaded the New England 36ft Boxcar Pack from RickKfoury. What I'm describing above occurred with them. After going to Golden Age and downloading the 36ft Generic Version boxcars, the New England Pack showed up immediately with no problems. I can't figure out what I'm missing that is making these other packs not appear! I've downloaded and installed everything on this page but this has accomplished nothing, nor can I find Mainelines' 40ft ACF Boxcar which appears to be one of these "base" cars. But the first download I attempted was the NYC version of this car and it worked fine. So what's going on?

This is a problem I'd like to solve before I tackle another problem: Frequently when I download rolling stock files, and then click on the completed download on the bottom left of my screen, I get an ERROR message:

"This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page."

I mean...*sigh*...what the heck does that mean? I looked up "default apps" on my Windows 10 and none of it made any sense. Can someone please explain this part to me? This message appears overwhelmingly when trying to download from Harry Adkins and Micheal Calvin (MadMike1024) - both have created a wide swath of excellent stuff that I'd like for my VNHRR Route among others.

I'd appreciate the help!

~ Dan

For starters try downloading this.

I aliased on my two models the basic car from MaineLines for the couplers and bogies. That is probably what you are missing on my two box cars. This is the original from Larry.

On the one that is taking up space but invisible you are probably missing the GeoPcDx file which would need to be copied from the original of whatever your re-paint is. That usually is what is wrong when you get that. The Rick models I'm not sure. He is no longer active but I'll take a look and see if I can figure out what might be wrong.

Welcome aboard. I'm sure that Buzz will sort things for you but strongly recommend that you use the Readme file which is usually part of the download. Some are not as clear as they might be but most folks who post repaints state in the Readme file what you have to do to get the item in the game. We are all guilty of not reading the manual, it is a very male failing!!

The cars from Rick will probably be fixed with the same thing. They appear to be the same model.

I downloaded that along with the others. It works fine. This brings me back to square one...

Okay...what is a GeoPcDx file and how do I get it? Also...what's "aliased"? I doublechecked the ReadMe files per mindenjohn's advice (I found nothing but general car descriptions) and saw the world "aliased" but that's new lingo to me. Thank you for the swift responses, by the way.

I'm also having the same issues with entirely different types of cars even after gaining a better understanding of what GeoPcDx files are.

For example, today I downloaded the Searchlight/JR 4750 Covered Hoppers. No issues there. Shockingly easy to download and enjoy.

Then I downloaded the RCPE 10 Pack which are based completely on the SS/JR 4750 covered hoppers. Step-by-step, the directions clearly explain how the JR4750_Repaint.GeoPCDX file must be copied-and-pasted into the folder for each car. Again, no issues. The RCPE hoppers appear perfectly fine.

BUT...then I downloaded the SS 4750 Mega Pack 1. The installation directions are even simpler. In the scenario editor, they appear like normal on the list with all the other rolling stock. But sure enough, they don't appear on the screen. I went back and opened the files for every car in the pack. A few had the GeoPcDx file but most didn't. So I copied the JR4750_Repaint.GeoPcDx file from the "Blank" folder (inside the original Searchlight folder downloaded from their website) and pasted it into all the cars that didn't have it.

As far as I can tell, this is precisely what Buzz explained above. But guess what? Still nothing.

I'm encountering this same scenario with the G-Trax Trinity Covered Hoppers pack which includes the generic hopper on which all other repaints are apparently based. No issues. They appear in the scenario editor fine. But then I pursued the BNSF Trinity Hoppers v.1.2 and of course they don't work. I made sure each car's file has the proper GeoPcDx file from the generic hopper and still nothing.

I just don't get why this is so complicated. What am I doing wrong? **!!bang!!**

Aliased means the file is using the aliased file for some of its data. Simply means that that both files need to be checked for the added file to work. Usually used for sounds e.g. aliased to the Kuju SD40-2 usually means that the sounds use the Kuju SD40-2 sounds.

I don't understand about you saying most of these don't have a Geo. I just went back and checked my D/L folder and they all have a Geo. If in fact you somehow don't have them you need to be careful to put the right Geo into each car or they won't show up. For instance the BNSF series needs to have the JR4750_BNSF.GeoPcDx and the CN one needs the JR4750_Repaint.GeoPcDx. The PTLX1 needs the JR4750_DH5dig.GeoPcDx. If you look at the name on the bin file it will tell you which Geo to install for that particular car.

It is most probably that you didn't install the GeoPcDx files into the proper location. The path should look like this: Assets\G-TraX\Trains\RailVehicles\Freight\Covered_Hopper\BNSF gray\Wagon (and so forth) Into that should go the file covhopper_trin01.GeoPcDx Each BNSF needs a Geo into it's individual wagon folder.

That's exactly what I've done and it's not working.

RWAProblem1.JPG

Just spitballin' ideas but...Shouldn't there be a uniform way for downloads to work here at RWA that's as simple as downloading from, say, Searchlight? Uniformity can go a long way. There's way too many files within the stuff I've downloaded. I mean, I'm only 36 yet even I'M having all kinds of problems trying to download all this great content.

Is there a more efficient way to organize all these files that reduces all the requirements for cars to work?

And you have this all installed into the Steam\steamapps\common\Railworks\Assets\G-Trax folder?

Yes sir, that's correct. Unless you have a different definition of "installed" of which I am unaware...

I have no idea what you mean. I was showing you the correct path where the files need to be.

Yep, and I'm saying it's still not working. And I have no idea why. No matter what I do, it seems like all the great material created here on RWA is exclusive to those highly proficient with Windows - more than the average guy. Standardization of downloading procedure would be a great leap forward.
