Camera #4 positioning

The external view obtained by pressing 4 on one's keyboard is a nice little drive-by view. However, I find it too close to the ground (a squirrels view) and too close to the train to be of any real value. Can one alter the camera position settings so that the camera is more human height? If so, where do I find the file to be altered?

Press 4, than press 8 and right click your mouse and you can move the camera around. In view 8, you can also hold CTRL while using the arrow keys to move around and use the mouse with right click to spin.

Press 4, than press 8 and right click your mouse and you can move the camera around.


Pressing 8 after pressing 4 only puts the camera into Yard View and negates the feature of the camera panning along with the loco. I do not see that as a solution. What I really want to do is raise the elevation of the camera off the ground in #4 view, and leave it at that.

Well you could pan the camera yourself but I understand what you're saying.

I found the camera and messed around with the values and unless someone else can come up with something it appears that the core game only allows the bottom setting to be on the ground. *!sad!*

That is most unfortunate. So, it would seem that #4, then #8 with some manual panning is about the best one could achieve.

One more thing you can do if this hasn't occurred to you, although this too will not give the automatic effect you desire.

While driving the train go into #8 view and race the camera ahead of the train as far as the sim will allow. Then drop down to the level you wish to be at and wait. The train will come past you eventually, how long depending of course on train speed. Turns you into a sort of pseudo-rail fanner.

It's also nice when driving a passenger train. You can race ahead to the next station, as soon as the sim allows you to get far enough ahead of the train, and be one of the passengers watching your train pull into the station, discharge and pickup passengers, etc. While you're standing on the platform you can observe your train's progress on the route progress bar in F3 or F4 view and center your train on the station icon for a "perfect landing." (Apologies to Buzz).

Also looks good standing at road crossings - watching the gates lower and the lights begin flashing as the vehicles begin stopping, then hearing your train approach as you blow the horn/whistle, culminating in your train passing by. A thrill a minute! *!greengrin!*
