My Dash 8 as above only has a engine idling sound even, when you increase the power, the only engine sound you get is the idling sound. Have installed it again and still the same. Sound files all seem to be there.

By default it does sound like that because in real life the FDL12 engine runs at a constant 900rpm, you can hear the chugging sound because a load is placed on the engine. Try downloading FanRailer's free no HEP sound or even TheAudioShack's payware sounds.

Then again, it's always good to keep the physics from Mike's mod, even if you buy TheAudioShack's soundset.
