More than one Stevens Pass?

Unread postby OldProf » Thu Mar 26, 2015 4:08 pm

Am I correct in thinking that the Stevens Pass route existed before RSC offered it as DLC? I'm asking because I just posted a new Workshop scenario for the Majestic Falls route and received several comments about rolling stock. It seems that I have Stephens Pass rolling stock that are not in the RSC route and vice-verse. As so often happens, I'm confused.

Are you looking in the GNTX folder Tom? That is where all of the Stevens Pass rolling stock resides however I think it was offered through RSC.

Stevens Pass was the first route DLC I bought, and it was definitely first released on Steam. November 2013 IIRC.

What rolling stock items were the folks having problems referring to?

Yep, I've been looking in GNTX. I also looked at the Workshop messages again: one complainant, who claims to be missing "coal hopper Def2" and "coal hopper v3", both of which are present and accounted for in the Stevens Pass on my computer and their use in the scenario checks out okay in RW_Tools.

However, the assets fly-out in Majestic Falls also includes this entry: StP GP38-2 Ex-BN nd, in which the final two letters stand for "no driver". I used this engine in my scenario, no one has complained about it, but RW_Tools identifies it as missing. Strange goings on here.

I too get those missing coal hoppers when trying to load your scenario. I see them in the appropriate folder. Even extracted the AP file but still no go.

These are not GNTX wagons, they are Kuju RailsimulatorUS "default" stuff.
Nowadays these are no longer default stock, I think, new users must purchase them with the North American loco pack.
That may explain why some have them and some don't.

This particular problem of rolling stock shown as missing while the files are clearly there seems to stem from incoherent data in the wagon blueprint. We had this problem with the old RWA US Wagons pack. Looking at the "Coal Hopper v3" blueprint I see this:

<cWagonBlueprint>
<Name d:type="cDeltaString">Coal Hopper v3</Name>
<BrowseInformation>
<iRailVehicleBlueprint-cBrowseRVInformation>
<DisplayName>
<Localisation-cUserLocalisedString>
<English d:type="cDeltaString">Hopper Coal Gondola Grey</English>

The two strings in red should be the same.
The Def2 hopper has the same problem.

Very interesting, Chacal! Your information sent me digging a bit, too, just not as deeply as you.

First, I opened the Majestic Falls scenario I'm working on in the scenario editor and checked the rolling stock fly-out for hoppers. Here's what I found:
1) StP Coal Hopper BNSF
2) StP Hopper Coal Brown
3) StP Hopper Coal Grey
4) StP Hopper Coal Silver
5) HSC Hopper H21a
6) MP COal Hopper Gondola Red
When placed on track, hoppers 1, 2, and 6 look exactly the same, which may mean that RSC included them in all three routes that are required by Majestic Falls.

I next looked at my scenario in RW_Tools, where I found only hoppers 5 and 6 listed among available stock in routes from the RSC folder. The Stevens Pass route that I have installed does not appear under RSC, but under GNTX\Stevens Pass, and hoppers 1 through 4 are listed there. The GNTX Stevens Pass route's manual includes this statement: "Locomotives and rolling stock were provided by RailSimulator.com, except double-stacks and aircraft specialty cars by GNTX. Modifications to RSC GP38-2, centerbeam flatcar, and caboose by GNTX." Does this suggest that GNTX somehow produced the name confusion errors you found?

In another perhaps interesting development, RW_Tools reports as missing "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RailWorks\Assets\GNTX\StevensPass\RailVehicles\Freight\CoalHopper\Default\Wagon\coal_hopper.bin, which is the source of hopper 1 above.

"Curiouser and curiouser."

It's normal unless you have unpacked the .ap file in Assets\GNTX\StevensPass.
RW-Tools can't find archived files.

So is there anything to be done for glitches such as this, aside from file edits that get painted over again by the next cache verification? Obviously, for me and my Majestic Falls scenarios, the trick is stumbling over the correct hopper, but as a scenario writer I tend to think that any rolling stock that shows up in the fly-out is fair game -- evidently, true for some players but not for all.

Just trace every asset in the scenario to the correct DLC and add them to your readme.

It helps if you limit the Rolling stock to that which comes with required routes.
For example, if Majestic Falls is based on, and requires, Stevens Pass, then try to use only Steven's Pass assets if you can, replacing HSC and MP assets with SP assets.

Kuju RailsimulatorUS assets are fair game, they are so widely used that very few players will have to buy them just for your scenarios.

As for the glitch, I'm afraid there's little you can do except avoid the glitched Rolling stock.
Perhaps manually editing the scenarioproperties.xml file and replacing incorrect strings?

I think I already noted that Majestic Falls requires Stephens Pass, Horseshoe Curve, and Marias Pass. I have used only the rolling stock from these 3 routes, all of which are pre-ticked in the assets fly-out. That's the whole premise of this thread: that some of those engines and cars are not available to everyone who owns those routes.

Yes I have all the required assets and routes.

You didn't, but I found the requirement on the Majestic Route's workshop page.
Regarding your missing hoppers, I found this:
1) StP Coal Hopper BNSF : This is the only hopper I have in the GNTX\StevensPass ap file
2) StP Hopper Coal Brown : I don't have this, maybe a repaint?
3) StP Hopper Coal Grey : I don't have this, maybe a repaint?
4) StP Hopper Coal Silver : I don't have this, maybe a repaint?
5) HSC Hopper H21a : It comes with HSC but is "broken"
6) MP Coal Hopper Gondola Red : It comes with MP but is "broken"
Where "broken" means the blueprint is not coherent as in my example above.
So basically only number 1 would work for everyone if I'm correct about the "broken" thing, which I am not sure of.

The remaining mystery is about missing "coal hopper Def2" and "coal hopper v3", I don't see where these fit into the picture.

Michael Stephan just reminded me in a PM that I may have installed a beta-testing version of Stevens Pass that I did not delete before installing the released version. This is making more and more sense to me, since although Steam tells me that Stevens Pass is part of my installation, I cannot find it in either RW_Tools or RSC Utilities.

I'd like someone to send me the DLC version of Stevens Pass's GID number, so I can check further.

SOLVED: I found the GID number on my own, uninstalled the route from Steam, then reinstalled it.

Thanks
