Simplistic tutorials: what's the use?

Unread postby OldProf » Fri Dec 26, 2014 12:00 pm

Yesterday, I let one of those nagging "still on sale" e-mails from DTG get to me and I purchased the Dipstick BR189 engine -- whoops, that's "Dis Pollack"; surely not -- too insulting in this politically correct era . . . ah, yes, there it is: "Dispolok" and the spell-checker is none too happy about that.

Anyway, as is my wont, I read the manual (what a concept, eh?) and discovered that this engine has some of the newer operating features such as velocity control, warning systems, etc. So I thought I'd see if a tutorial was available and, sure enough, there it was (after a bit of awkward digging through through this year's counter-intuitive interface, of course): "Training: BR 189 Advanced controls". I quickly discovered, not at all to my surprise, that this should have been subtitled "pre-Kindergarden version": this is a HUD, these are the cute little controls on the HUD, let's try ... slamming on the throttle at 50% followed by slamming on the brakes at 50% or even 75%, complete with little red boxes and ... Sheesh! Okay, an absolute newbie might find this stuff useful. I mean, it even includes coupling! What more could a budding engineer desire?

Something about the "advanced features", perhaps? Not on your life, buster. Although I tend to shy away from such debates, this junk brings up the game vs. simulator issue all over again. Perhaps I'll put my money where my mouth is (well, actually, I already did that, no?) and write a tutorial myself . . . yes, right after I try stuffing one more AI train into the switching scenario I'm writing for the new version of VNHRR.

Oh, but look! I just achieved another achievement! Life is good, after all.

Update (since I'm evidently talking only to myself, why not?)

This engine is supposedly equipped with "AFB Train Power Control" (rather like cruise control on a car). In the manual, the instructions for use read as follows:

To operate AFB, simply follow these steps:
1. Set the AFB control to the desired speed. Note on the speedometer a small red
triangle “bug” will slide around to the configured speed.
2. Release the brakes.
3. Move the throttle control to the desired level of acceleration, at this point the train
will begin moving and accelerate to the configured speed.

Lower on the page, keyboard controls are listed as Y to increase, C to decrease.

I wanted to try this. The first thing I noticed was that the actual cab layout does not resemble the one depicted in the manual. The latter shows AFB controls located on a desk-like surface just below the gauges; in the model, the AFB controls sit to the driver's left and seeing both the controls and the speedometer simultaneously is impossible. The second absurdity is that pressing Y does nothing and pressing C causes the Passenger-Freight buttons to flicker and make noise. Moving the AFB increase-decrease rocker switch with the mouse causes a white indicator to move around the speedometer, not a red "bug". The brakes cannot be fully released once the AFB has been turned on. The instructions quoted above make no mention of setting the reverser, which I set to forward on my own initiative. With the brake set as low as possible, moving the power lever has no effect at all. No wonder there's no tutorial for this - - - it does not work!

Thanks a lot, RSC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People are probably a little "nervous" to respond. Kind of reminds me (before I retired) the company I worked for hired consultants to help tell us how to do our job better when, in fact, they had never done what I did, or didn't have the first clue what it was all about. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? !*whack*!
