RESOLVED - Startup Crash

Unread postby TDHenderson » Mon Feb 17, 2014 11:41 am

So I usually am pretty good at watching what M$ wants to install on my PC, but they snuck the upgrade to IE11 in on me this weekend. Now, TS2014 fails to start, crashing to the desktop before the startup video starts.

Am going to try to revert back to a system restore point before that happened OR try to remove IE11 and get IE9 back on, but anyone else here fought this yet with success?

Did not do that for me. I have no other browser and updates are on automagic for me. I use it at home as does my wife and I use it at work along with 7 other PCs we have. On systems from Vista to Win 8.

It ain't IE...

You're probably right, Bob. Three things happened, a bunch of M$ updates along with IE11, a reinstall of the New Haven route as it was crashing on any scenario load, and a new nVidia driver. Going back to a system restore point prior and hope that helps.

Then again, it may be time for a fresh bare - bones reinstallation.

Do you mean of TS2014? Don't do that yet, TD. If this TS install is a "carry over" (upgrade) from previous versions, like TS2013/ 2012, you will lose a lot of older "default" stock, and maybe a few routes as well. But if this install of TS is from TS2014 only, you'll be OK.

Check out the NVidia driver as a source of your problem also. Some of them have been somewhat notorius for causing issues like you are having.

I got the 332.21's a week or so back, they seem to be really nice. Gave about 10 frames better performance all around.

That is the NVidia version I just installed as well. Am going to back that out.

Yeah, this installation has been upgraded through the various September yearly updates to TS2014. It has grown to 94.3GB in size.

Below is the crash data from the App event log. It all points to GameManager.dll. I have removed that file and let Verify Cache do its thing, but I still get the same crash after it has been restored.

Faulting application name: RailWorks.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x52a74fb5
Faulting module name: GameManager.dll, version: 3.0.0.1, time stamp: 0x52a74fa7
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x008ea5b5
Faulting process id: 0x1110
Faulting application start time: 0x01cf2c1da24f5dab
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\RailWorks.exe

TDH
A third party addon, route, DLC, scenario can also affect gamemanager.dll so cache verification ain't going to work.
I have NOT seen any issues with any NVidia driver 2xx.xx to 3xx.xx series and Train Simulator pre 2012 up to 2014 ie in over 3 years - guess I'm lucky!
You certainly have an invalid (generic) call to a memory address (0xc00000005) that is not there or unavailable but I can't be more specific than that!
To revert back to IE 10/9 just use the control panel programs and features - view installed updates click on IE12 - uninstall and the system will revert to an earlier version.

Am 99% sure this started when I uninstalled and reinstalled the New Haven route. Am chasing that fox at the moment.

Waving the white flag. Have renamed my railworks folder to railworks_org and am downloading a fresh install. Want to see if I can even get running again.

A fresh install runs just fine. Am going to copy those files over into the backup copy, rename the folder, and see what happens.

But first, I need a beer.

Darn, was just going to suggest looking for our old friend "PONtrack.bin". Could have recently picked that up, would explain the sudden crashes. But with that backup, you can add back in the stuff you want. Keep this install leaner and meaner. *!!wink!!*

Yeah, that is what I am going to have to do. I copied over the working files into my non-working install, renamed the folder, and it crashed again. Has to be something 3rd party related.

Oh well, the old install was very bloated anyway. A fresh install of FSX always cleared up issues, why not TS2014.

Thanks for all advice given. *!!thnx!!*
